BMW 6 diesel knocking with oil pressure warning, Help!

Oil light on

|

Weird engine noise

Hey everyone! My 2015 BMW 6 diesel is giving me trouble. The oil pressure warning light came on along with loud engine knocking sounds. When scanned, it showed oil pressure control faults. I suspect low oil pressure but want to be sure before taking it to a workshop. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and funny enough, I had a similar issue with my 2013 BMW 5 series diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing are exactly what I experienced, that dreaded oil pressure warning and the scary knocking noise. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty oil pump. Had it fixed at my regular workshop, set me back about 755 Euro for parts and labor. They had to drain the system, replace the pump, and do a full oil change. Fixed the problem completely. Since you've got the 6 series, there might be some differences though. Could you share: Current mileage on your car? When was your last oil change? Does the noise get worse at higher RPMs? This info would help determine if you're facing the same issue. Don't wait too long to get it checked, these symptoms could lead to serious engine damage if ignored.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car just hit 30254 KM and had its service last month. The knocking definitely gets worse when I rev higher, especially past 2500 RPM. Really worried about potential engine damage, so planning to get it checked this week. Your oil pump situation sounds quite similar to what I might be dealing with, really hoping it's not something more serious! Really appreciate the detailed response.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up info about your BMW. Based on those details, I'm even more convinced now that you're dealing with the same oil pump issue I had. The symptoms are matching up perfectly, especially that worse knocking at higher RPMs. That's exactly how mine acted up. Since you mentioned your recent service, that actually helps narrow things down. The fact that it's happening right after a service with fresh oil rules out old or degraded oil as the culprit. Plus, with only 30254 KM, your engine should still be in pretty good shape overall. Just to share more about my experience, when my pump was failing, I noticed the knocking would get really bad during acceleration, just like yours. The shop told me the pump wasn't building enough pressure at higher RPMs, which explains why the noise got worse when revving. Definitely get it checked out this week as planned. One thing I learned the hard way, don't try to "nurse it" too long. I drove mine for about a week after the symptoms started, and my mechanic later told me I was lucky not to cause more damage. Let me know what your shop finds. I'm really curious if it turns out to be the same issue. These modern BMW diesels are great cars but they can be a bit finicky with their oil systems!

Thanks so much for all this detail! It's super helpful and honestly makes me feel better knowing someone else went through the exact same thing. I've actually decided to take it to the shop tomorrow morning instead of waiting, your warning about potential engine damage really hit home. Already called and got an early appointment. Just hoping you're right about it being the oil pump. Sounds expensive to fix, but way better than major engine repairs! I'll definitely update once I know what's going on. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail, it's helped me understand what I might be dealing with. Let's see what the mechanic says tomorrow!

Let our mechanics help you!
