BMW 6 Diesel Belt Handover System Failure and Fix Needed

Seatbelt carrier problem

Having trouble with my 2017 BMW 6 diesel. The seat belt-handover system stopped working completely and there's a related error code stored. I suspect it might be the belt tensioner causing this. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Looking for some insights before taking it to the shop.

Hey there! I'm pretty familiar with BMWs. I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW 5 series diesel. The belt handover just stopped working one day, and it was super annoying. After checking with my usual workshop, they found that the belt bringer mechanism itself was faulty and needed replacement. The fix wasn't cheap, cost me 455 Euro, but it solved the problem completely. No issues since then. From what I've seen in my BMW 7 series as well, these systems can be a bit finicky. What's the mileage on your 6 series? Also, does it make any unusual sounds when you open/close the door? This info would help me tell if you're dealing with the same problem I had. Quick tip: Don't try DIY fixes on this one, these systems are pretty complex and tied to safety features. Better let a pro handle it.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 6er has 90296 KM on the clock, and I just had it serviced last month. Funny you mention the sound, I actually do hear a slight clicking noise when opening the driver's door. Now I'm thinking it might be the same issue you had. I'll probably need to bite the bullet and get it checked out by the dealer. Good to know what to expect cost-wise too. Did you need to leave your car at the shop for long when they fixed yours?

Hey again! Yeah, that clicking sound you're describing is exactly what I experienced with mine. And with 90k+ km, these things can start acting up, pretty similar to when mine started having issues around 85k km. When I had mine fixed, the dealer kept it for about a day and a half. They needed extra time because they had to order the part, but the actual repair only took a few hours. They gave me a loaner car though, so it wasn't too inconvenient. Just a heads up, make sure they check the wiring harness too while they're at it. My mechanic found some slight wear on the cables during the repair, but luckily it wasn't bad enough to need replacement. Could save you from future headaches. I've been super happy with how it's working since the fix, smooth as butter now, no more clicking, and the belt handover works perfectly every time. Definitely worth getting it sorted properly at the dealer, even if it costs a bit more. These comfort features really make a difference in daily driving, don't they? Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Always interested to hear if others have the same experience I did with these BMWs.

I appreciate all the detailed info! Yeah, I think I'm definitely dealing with the exact same problem you had. A day and a half at the shop isn't too bad, good to know they offer a loaner car. Really smart tip about checking the wiring harness too, I'll make sure to mention that when I take it in. You're absolutely right about these comfort features, it's amazing how much you miss them when they're not working! I've already gotten used to the belt handover, so it's pretty annoying without it. Think I'll call the dealer tomorrow and schedule an appointment. The clicking sound is starting to bug me anyway, and I'd rather get it fixed before it potentially turns into a bigger issue. Thanks again for all your help! It's really helpful to hear from someone who's already dealt with this. I'll try to remember to update you on what they find when I get it checked out. Nice to know I'm not the only one who's had this quirk with their BMW!

Let our mechanics help you!
