Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear it was a straightforward fix. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm trying to budget for this repair and want to make sure I'm not overlooking anything potentially related.
Hey there! Happy to update you on my repair experience. Yeah, I got it sorted pretty quick, ended up paying 155 € total, which covered both the sensor replacement and labor. Honestly, it was worth every penny because my car's been running like a charm since then. The best part is that all those annoying issues completely disappeared after the fix. No more check engine light, the sluggish acceleration is gone, and I haven't had a single problem since. The car feels way more responsive now, and I'm not getting those scary limp mode episodes during drives anymore. Just a heads up, when they replaced my sensor, they also cleaned out the connector housing really well, which probably helped prevent any future issues. If you're going ahead with the repair, make sure they do that too. Trust me, it's a solid investment to get it done properly. My car feels just like new now!
Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update. You were spot on about everything! My repair ended up being very similar to yours, they replaced the sensor and cleaned the housing. The total came to a bit more than yours, but still reasonable considering how much better the car runs now. The whole process was smoother than I expected. The mechanic I found was really thorough and even showed me the corroded old sensor, which was actually worse than I thought. They got it done in about an hour and a half. Already did a decent test drive and what a difference! No more check engine light, and the car's got its power back. Definitely feels more responsive, especially when accelerating. Should've done this sooner instead of worrying about it. Thanks again for helping me understand what to expect. It really helped me feel more confident about getting the repair done, and now I can finally enjoy driving my BMW again without stressing about performance issues.
I had the exact same issue on my 2011 BMW 5 series last month. The symptoms were identical, check engine light and sluggish acceleration. Actually, my car would sometimes go into limp mode during highway driving. The intake air temp sensor was indeed defective and had corroded contacts. It was a straightforward fix, the sensor needed replacement along with cleaning of the connector housing. The whole job took about an hour at the garage. This isn't typically a serious issue, but it can cause poor engine performance and increased fuel consumption if left unattended. The sensor basically tells the ECU about incoming air temperature so it can adjust the fuel mixture. When it fails, the car runs rich as a safety measure. My mechanic showed me the old sensor, and you could clearly see the corrosion buildup. Just make sure they check the wiring harness too, sometimes the problem isn't the sensor itself but the connections. Since fixing it, my car has been running perfectly with no check engine lights.
