BMW 5 Series Turbo Troubles: Whistling and Stalling Alert

Whistling noise

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Loud hissing on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Stalling while idling

Hi all! Had a terrible experience with my mechanic recently, so I'm looking for advice. My 2011 BMW 5 Series diesel (30205 km) is acting up pretty badly. The engine's been jerking during acceleration, making weird whistling and hissing sounds, and occasionally stalls when idling. Check engine light is on, and I've noticed higher fuel consumption with less power. I'm thinking it might be a boost pressure sensor issue, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. What was your diagnosis and repair experience? Any recommendations for dealing with this? Thanks in advance for your help!

I had nearly identical issues with my 2014 BMW 3 Series diesel last year. The symptoms matched yours exactly, jerking, whistling, power loss, and that annoying check engine light. Turned out the boost pressure sensor connector was badly corroded, causing intermittent signals to the ECU. The mechanic found this after testing the sensor's voltage output. This explained why the engine would sometimes run fine, then suddenly lose power. Fixed it by replacing both the sensor and wiring harness since corrosion had spread. While not a hugely complex repair, it was critical to fix it quickly as bad sensor readings can potentially damage other components over time. Since you have similar symptoms to what I experienced, I'd recommend getting it checked soon. It's typically not a catastrophic issue if caught early, but definitely needs proper diagnosis and repair to prevent further problems.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That does sound really similar to what I'm dealing with. I'm actually planning to get it checked this week. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the sensor and harness replacement? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Would really appreciate the info before I head to the shop.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up since I saw your questions. After I took my 3 Series to the mechanic, it turned out my suspicions were right, it was indeed a bad boost pressure sensor. The main issue was actually just a faulty cable connection to the sensor, which was causing all those problems we discussed. The total repair came to 95 € to fix the cable connection, which was way less than I initially feared! No need for a complete sensor or harness replacement in my case, thankfully. The best news is that since getting it fixed, my car's been running like a dream. No more jerking during acceleration, those annoying whistling sounds are gone, and the engine performance is back to normal. It's been about a year now, and I haven't had a single related issue pop up. Really hope your repair goes as smoothly as mine did. Seems like we caught the same issue early enough to prevent any serious damage. Let me know how it turns out!

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses! Just wanted to update you on what happened with my BMW. Finally got it checked out by the mechanic today. You won't believe it, but it was actually a pretty simple fix! Turns out I had a loose connection in the wiring, similar to what the last mechanic mentioned. The mechanic showed me how the connector had worked itself loose over time, causing all those crazy symptoms. He cleaned the connection points, secured everything properly, and even added some protective coating to prevent future corrosion. The whole thing only cost me 120 bucks, which was such a relief, I was honestly expecting a much bigger bill! Been driving it for a few hours now, and what a difference! No more jerking or weird noises, and the engine's running super smooth again. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Just wanted to say thanks again for sharing your experiences, definitely helped me feel less worried about taking it in. Next time I'll definitely get these things checked out sooner rather than waiting until it gets worse!
