BMW 5 Series Stalling: Tank Valve Causing Engine Mode Issue

Check engine light on

|

Stalling while idling

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2006 BMW 5 series. Engine's running in emergency mode with check engine light on, and it stalls at idle. Engine control unit shows fault codes too. I suspect the tank ventilation valve might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for experiences with repairs and solutions from those who've fixed this issue. What did your mechanic find and how was it resolved? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I have some experience with BMWs, as I own a 2004 BMW 3 series, and my drives a 7 series. I actually had a very similar issue last month. The symptoms were almost identical, emergency mode, stalling at idle, and those annoying fault codes. Turned out my fuel system hoses were completely clogged. My trusted mechanic did a thorough cleaning of the hoses and replaced a couple that were beyond saving. The whole thing cost me 175 Euro, but it's been running perfectly since then. Before jumping to conclusions about the tank ventilation valve, could you share if you've noticed any fuel smell or changes in fuel consumption? Also, what's your exact engine type? That would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. Most BMW problems are pretty similar across models, but knowing these details would help nail down whether you're dealing with the same issue I had. Let me know these details and I'll try to share more specific info from my repair experience!

Thanks for sharing your experience! I have the gasoline engine model with 82859 KM on the clock, and just to add, I haven't noticed any fuel smell, but fuel consumption has increased slightly over the past few weeks. I did a service check recently and everything seemed fine, but this issue started suddenly last week. Your fuel system hose situation sounds quite similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any warning signs before it got serious? I'll definitely get those hoses checked when I take it to the mechanic.

Hey again! Yeah, after reading about your fuel consumption increase, it sounds even more similar to what I went through with my BMW. Looking back, I did notice some warning signs that I initially ignored. About a month before the emergency mode kicked in, my car would occasionally hesitate when accelerating from a stop. I also noticed the idle getting a bit rougher, especially when the engine was warm. The increased fuel consumption was definitely a red flag I should've paid attention to earlier. In my case, besides the clogged fuel hoses, they also found that the fuel pressure regulator was acting up. That's what was causing most of the fuel consumption issues. The whole repair ended up including both the hoses and the regulator, which bumped up the cost a bit, but it was worth it. Since your mileage is pretty close to what mine was when this happened, I'd definitely recommend getting both checked. These issues tend to show up around this mileage in these models. My mechanic mentioned it's actually quite common in BMWs from our era. Feel free to ask anything else, I've kept all the repair documents if you need specific part numbers or anything. These problems can be a pain, but they're definitely fixable!

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! It's really helpful to hear from someone who's been through something so similar. I definitely noticed that hesitation during acceleration too, but didn't think much of it at the time. Now it all makes sense! I'll make sure to have both the fuel hoses and pressure regulator checked out when I take it in. Really appreciate you mentioning those specific parts, gives me something concrete to discuss with my mechanic. It's actually a relief to know this is a common issue that can be fixed. I'll schedule an appointment first thing tomorrow. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's been super helpful!
