BMW 5 Series Oil Warning: Fix & Cost Insights Needed

Oil light on

|

Weird engine noise

Hi everyone! My BMW 5 Series Hybrid (2023) with 102,961 km started giving me trouble recently. The oil pressure warning keeps coming on, and I'm hearing some concerning engine noises. The diagnostic also showed an engine oil pressure control fault. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar oil pressure issues in their 5 Series? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my BMW 3 Series Hybrid (2020) last year. The oil pressure warning started popping up intermittently, followed by those worrying engine noises, mainly a knocking sound when accelerating. Turned out the oil pump was failing, which is actually a serious issue that needs immediate attention. Left untreated, it can cause catastrophic engine damage. When I took it to the garage, they found metal shavings in the oil, which confirmed the pump was deteriorating. They had to replace the entire oil pump assembly and flush the system to remove any debris. The car was in the shop for three days, but it's been running perfectly since then. The engine noise disappeared completely after the repair. Just a heads up, don't drive too much with that warning light on. I learned that low oil pressure can wreck your engine in minutes, not hours. Find a certified BMW specialist who knows hybrid systems well. Best of luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience, this is super helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with! Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, just curious if you've had any other issues pop up since they fixed it?

Hey again! Happy to update you! Since my previous post, I took your advice and went to see a certified mechanic. The total bill came to 755 € for fixing the faulty oil pump, and I can tell you it was worth every penny. The knocking sound is completely gone, and that annoying oil pressure warning hasn't shown up since. It's been smooth sailing for over a year now, no other issues whatsoever. The car runs like new, and the engine sounds healthy again. Just keep in mind that with these hybrids, it's super important to get these warning signs checked out quickly. I learned my lesson about not waiting too long! If you're experiencing the same symptoms, I'd definitely recommend getting it looked at ASAP. The peace of mind is worth it, and honestly, the repair cost could've been much worse if I'd kept driving with the problem. Let me know if you need any other info about the repair process!

Thanks again for all the details! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. Following your advice, I took it to a certified BMW specialist, and you were spot on, it was the oil pump causing all the trouble. They found metal debris in the oil too, just like in your case. The repair set me back about 800 €, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. They got it done in two days, and I can already tell the difference. The engine's running quietly now, no more scary noises or warning lights. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. The mechanic mentioned I caught it just in time before it could cause any serious damage. Definitely feeling relieved now and won't be going back to my old mechanic. Sometimes paying a bit more for proper expertise is worth it! Thanks again for helping me avoid what could've been a much bigger headache. The car's purring like a kitten now!

Let our mechanics help you!
