Hi, I had a similar problem with my BMW 3 Series (2002 model, also gasoline engine). I have little experience with cars, but decided to have it checked at my garage. There it turned out that the cable from the DISA valve was defective. The repair cost me 155 euros, so it's nothing major. Good luck
