BMW 5 Series Hybrid: Window Power System Failure Fix?

Power windows malfunction

|

Fault stored

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid. The power windows stopped working completely and there's an error code stored in the system. I suspect it might be a window regulator issue. Has anyone dealt with something similar? Would love to know what your repair experience was like and what exactly needed to be fixed. Any tips on diagnosis or solutions would be helpful. Thanks

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars (some experience level) and had a similar issue with my 2016 BMW 3 Series Hybrid last year. The power windows just stopped working one day, super annoying! Took it to my regular workshop and turns out it was just a faulty power window switch. The repair was pretty straightforward and cost me about 200 Euro. The mechanic told me this is actually a somewhat common issue with these models. Before you jump to conclusions about the regulator though, which windows aren't working (all or specific ones)? Are you hearing any unusual sounds when pressing the switches? Does your car show any specific error messages? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Hope this helps!

Hey, thanks for your detailed response! I'm dealing with all four windows not working, and yeah, there's a clicking sound from the driver's side switch panel. My car's at 40141 KM and just had its service done recently. From what you're saying about the switch issue, that could definitely be it since the symptoms sound pretty similar. I'm not getting any specific error message on the display, just that general window malfunction warning. Did your mechanic mention how long the repair usually takes? I'm trying to figure out if I need to set aside the car for a full day or if it's a quicker fix. Really appreciate the help, it's good to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this!

Hey again! Yeah, I totally see what you mean about the clicking sound, that's exactly what mine was doing! Since you mentioned all four windows are affected and you're getting that clicking from the driver's side panel, it's even more likely we're dealing with the same issue. The master switch panel was the culprit in my case. For the repair time, honestly, it was super quick. My mechanic had it done in about an hour and a half. Most of that time was actually spent doing the diagnostic check and removing the door panel. The actual switch replacement only took like 15-20 minutes. So you definitely won't need to leave your car there all day. Just a heads up though, when they replaced my switch, they also checked the wiring harness in the door, just to be on the safe side. It's worth asking them to do that while they're in there. Mine was fine, but apparently, these can sometimes get worn where they flex between the door and the frame. Interesting that yours happened right after a service, mine actually started acting up not long after a service too. Maybe it's just coincidence, but kind of makes you wonder, right? Let me know how it goes when you get it fixed! Always curious to hear if others have the same experience I did with these BMWs.

Thanks so much for all this info! It's such a relief to hear it's likely just the master switch panel and not something more serious. The timing detail is especially helpful, I'll try to schedule it for tomorrow morning since it sounds like I can still make it to work in the afternoon. Really appreciate you mentioning the wiring harness check too, definitely going to ask them to look at that while they're working on it. You're right about the service timing being weird... maybe something got knocked loose during the inspection? Who knows! I'll update you once I get it sorted out. Thanks again for taking the time to help me figure this out, it's made me feel a lot better about the whole situation. These luxury cars can be tricky sometimes, but at least we can learn from each other's experiences!
