BMW 5 Series Hybrid: Transmission Warning Signs & Solutions

Hey BMW 5 Series owners! Having some transmission troubles with my 2021 Hybrid model. The car's throwing transmission and engine warning lights, running in emergency mode with rough shifting and grinding sounds. I suspect it might be the transmission oil temp sensor acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear your experiences with repairs and workshop solutions.

Hey there! I went through something very similar with my 2019 BMW 7 Series Hybrid (the big of your 5 Series). I've got some experience working on cars, but transmissions are definitely workshop territory for me. Had those exact symptoms, warning lights, emergency mode, horrible grinding. Turned out my gearbox oil was critically low. Got it fixed at my regular workshop for 365 Euro, they did a thorough check, topped up the oil, and ran diagnostics to make sure there wasn't any damage. What's your current mileage and service history? That'd help figure out if we're dealing with the same issue. Also, are you noticing any oil spots where you park?

Last time my car was serviced was about 2 months ago at 181048 KM. Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm seeing similar symptoms, and it's good to know yours was just a low oil issue. No oil spots where I park, but the grinding noise is really concerning. Makes me nervous every time I drive. I think I'll get it checked by a professional rather than risk any serious damage. Guess it's better to be safe than sorry with these high-tech transmissions.

Hey again! Thanks for the update on your service history. You're absolutely right about being cautious, these modern hybrid transmissions are complex beasts. When I had my issues, I initially thought I could tough it out for a few more days, but that grinding noise made me change my mind real quick. Looking back, I'm so glad I didn't wait. My mechanic later told me that continuing to drive with those symptoms could've led to much more expensive repairs. In my case, even though the oil level was the main culprit, they also found that my transmission control module needed a software update. These new hybrid systems are really sensitive to even minor issues. Since getting it fixed, I haven't had a single problem for over 30,000 km now. Quick tip though, when you take it in, make sure they check the transmission oil quality too, not just the level. In these newer BMWs, contaminated oil can cause similar symptoms. When they checked mine, the oil had actually degraded more than expected, despite regular services. Let us know what they find! Always curious to learn more about these issues since our cars are so similar.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! You've definitely convinced me to get it checked ASAP. The part about the transmission control module needing an update is really interesting, I wouldn't have thought about that. I'll make sure to ask them to check both the oil level and quality when I take it in. I've actually just booked an appointment for tomorrow morning. Can't risk driving around with that grinding noise anymore, especially after what you said about potential damage. Plus, these newer hybrid systems are way too expensive to mess around with. My mechanic specializes in BMW hybrids, so hopefully they'll sort it out quickly. Really appreciate your help and sharing your experience. It's super helpful to hear from someone who's dealt with similar issues. I'll update the thread once I find out what's actually causing the problem. Fingers crossed it's just something simple like your oil issue!
