BMW 5 Series Hybrid Error Codes: System Check Issues

Error message in the speedometer

Hi everyone! My 2019 BMW 5 Series Hybrid is giving me trouble. Getting error messages in the speedometer display and the system has stored error codes. I suspect it might be related to an incomplete system readiness check. Has anyone dealt with similar issues on their hybrid BMW? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and how your mechanic resolved it. Specifically interested in what repairs were needed and if there were any specific parts that needed replacement. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on hybrids. I actually drive a 2021 BMW 3 Series Hybrid and previously owned a 7 Series. I had a similar issue last month with error messages popping up. After scanning with my OBD2 reader, it turned out the error codes were indeed related to incomplete readiness tests. Fortunately, no repairs were needed, just had to do a proper drive cycle to complete all the system checks. My workshop confirmed this was pretty common after certain maintenance work or if the battery had been disconnected. Could you share what specific error messages you're seeing and when they started appearing? Also, has any recent work been done on the car? This info would help figure out if you're dealing with the same thing I encountered.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My issue started right after my latest service about 2 weeks ago. I'm seeing "Check Control" messages followed by "Drivetrain Malfunction" occasionally. Currently at 96474 KM and getting a bit worried since it's happening more frequently now. Haven't tried an OBD scan yet, but it's good to know it might just need a proper drive cycle. Was there a specific driving pattern you followed to clear yours? Definitely don't want to make unnecessary repairs if it's just a system reset issue.

Hey again! Glad I can help further with this. Yes, those exact error messages you're describing are very similar to what I experienced with my BMW. After seeing your mileage and hearing it started after a service, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue I dealt with. For the drive cycle that worked for me, I followed a simple pattern: I drove normally for about 20-30 minutes, making sure to include both city and highway speeds. The key was letting the car go through different operating conditions, some steady cruising, a few accelerations, and some idle time at stops. I avoided using any comfort features like climate control during this process. In my case, the "Drivetrain Malfunction" message disappeared after two complete drive cycles. Just make sure the car is warmed up properly before starting the cycle. I was pretty nervous too when these messages kept popping up, but it turned out to be nothing major. If the messages persist after trying this, then yeah, might be worth getting that OBD scan done. But honestly, based on what you're describing, it sounds identical to my situation. Keep us posted on how it goes!

Thanks so much for the detailed advice! I just tried following your suggested drive cycle pattern this morning, 30 minutes of mixed driving with the car fully warmed up. The "Drivetrain Malfunction" message hasn't appeared since! I even did a second cycle just to be sure, and everything seems stable now. You were absolutely right about it being related to the recent service. Can't tell you how relieved I am that it didn't require any expensive repairs. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and walking me through the solution. Will definitely keep this in mind if it happens again after future services. Think I'll still get that OBD reader you mentioned though, seems like a handy tool to have for these situations. Thanks again for helping me avoid an unnecessary trip to the workshop!
