BMW 5 Series Hybrid Blower Motor Failure Help Needed

Blower does not work properly

Hi everyone! My 2013 BMW 5 Series Hybrid has developed an issue, the blower motor isn't working at all. The car's throwing an error code for this problem. I suspect it's related to the fresh air blower, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'd really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks!

Hi there! I have some experience working on cars and dealt with a very similar issue on my 2011 BMW ActiveHybrid 7. The symptoms were exactly the same as what you're describing, no air flow and an error code. After struggling with it for a few days, I took it to my trusted workshop. Turned out the blower motor was completely dead and needed replacement. The whole thing, including labor, set me back around 365 Euro, but it fixed the issue completely. I've owned a few BMWs (including a 3 Series) and this seems to be a somewhat common problem with their ventilation systems as they age. What's your current mileage? Also, does it make any noise at all when you try to run the blower? This info would help me understand if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car's currently at 32913 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. No noise at all when trying to run the blower, it's completely silent. Did your repair also involve any work on the resistor or control module, or was it just the motor itself? Really hope it won't cost me as much as yours did, but at least I know what I might be looking at now.

Hey again! Yeah, in my case it was just the blower motor itself that needed replacement, no issues with the resistor or control module. Mine was completely silent too, just like yours. The funny thing is, my BMW had similar mileage when this happened (around 35000 KM), which makes me even more convinced you're dealing with the same problem I had. Just to clarify something from my previous reply, while the total cost was indeed around 365 Euro, I actually found out later that I could've saved some money by getting an aftermarket part instead of the OEM one. The labor wasn't too bad since it's a fairly straightforward replacement job. One thing I didn't mention before, before the motor completely died on me, I did notice it was getting a bit noisy for about a week or so. But seems like yours just went out without warning, which can happen too. The good news is that once it's replaced, you shouldn't have any more issues with it. Mine's been working perfectly for the past two years now. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out, I'm curious if it turns out to be the same issue!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really interesting that your BMW had almost the same mileage when this happened. Mine definitely didn't give any warning signs, just stopped working one day. Really good to know about the aftermarket parts option, I'll definitely look into that to save some money. Think I'll get it checked out next week and I'll make sure to ask about both OEM and aftermarket options. Actually feeling a bit relieved now knowing this is probably just the blower motor and not something more complicated with the control module or electrical system. Two years of trouble-free operation after the repair sounds pretty good to me! I'll definitely update this thread once I get it sorted out, might help someone else with the same issue down the line. Thanks again for all your help with this!
