BMW 5 Series Hybrid AC and Climate Control Problems

Malfunction of the climate control unit

Having issues with my 2013 BMW 5 Series Hybrid. The climate control system is acting up, no cooling from AC, rear climate controls dead, and getting error codes. I suspect it's the rear ventilation flap failing. Has anyone dealt with this? Would love to hear about repair experiences and what your mechanic actually found. Any tips on diagnosis would help too.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW 7 Series Hybrid. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with last month. In my case, it turned out to be a loose cable connection to the climate control module. My regular workshop found that some plugs had worked themselves loose over time, causing those exact symptoms, no AC, dead rear controls, the whole deal. The fix was pretty straightforward, they reconnected and secured the cables properly, which cost me 95 Euro. Working perfectly since then. What's your exact model spec? Have you noticed any other electrical issues? This info would help me give you more specific advice about whether you're dealing with the same problem I had. By the way, if it helps, the workshop first tested the flap motors, but that wasn't the culprit. Saved me from unnecessarily replacing parts.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 74017 KM, just had its service last month. After reading your reply, I checked for any loose connections first, smart tip about testing before replacing parts. The AC issues started right after a really hot day, and I've noticed the fan speed seems inconsistent too. Haven't spotted any other electrical gremlins though. Definitely sounds cheaper than what I was worried about with the flap replacement. Going to have my mechanic look at those connections first before diving deeper into more expensive repairs. Really appreciate the heads up about your experience with the cable connections.

Hey again! Yeah, that inconsistent fan speed you mentioned rings a bell, that's exactly how mine started acting up too. Good call checking those connections first. My car was around 82000 KM when I had the issue, so pretty similar mileage to yours. Funny thing is, mine also started playing up after a really hot spell, I actually thought the heat had fried something more serious at first. The fan would sometimes blast full speed then drop to nothing, super annoying. Since you mentioned getting it serviced recently, might be worth checking if anything got knocked loose during the service work. Quick question, when your AC cuts out, does the display still show the temperature settings normally? In my case, everything looked fine on the display, which is partly what led my mechanic to check the connections rather than jumping straight to component replacement. I'd be really interested to hear what your mechanic finds. If it turns out to be the same cable issue, you'll probably be back on the road pretty quick. Keep us posted!

Really appreciate the follow-up! You've actually described my situation perfectly, the display still shows all the temperature settings normally, which was confusing me. It's doing exactly what yours did with the fan going from full blast to nothing. I've booked it in with my mechanic for tomorrow morning, and I'm feeling much more optimistic now knowing it might just be those connections, especially since our cars are showing such similar symptoms at similar mileage points. Definitely a relief that it might not be a major component failure! Will update the thread once I get it checked out, hopefully with some good news about a simple fix like yours. Thanks again for all the detailed info, it's been super helpful in figuring out where to start with the diagnosis!
