Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm currently at 86280 KM and had my last service about 2 months ago. The issue started quite suddenly, was working fine one day, completely dead the next. No other error messages showing up, and everything else in the infotainment system works perfectly (radio, navigation, etc.). It's just the hands-free calling that's giving me trouble. Interesting that you mention the control module, did your mechanic try checking the microphone first, or did they go straight to replacing the module? Just trying to figure out if I should start with the simpler (and hopefully cheaper) fix first. My BMW's been pretty reliable overall, but these electronic gremlins can be such a pain!
Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your 5 series. You know, after hearing that everything else is working fine except the hands-free calling, I'm actually leaning more toward your initial suspicion about the microphone. In my 3 series case, it was different because the whole system was dead, that's why they went straight for the control module. I probably should have mentioned earlier that before my complete system failure, I actually had a similar issue to yours where just the calling wasn't working. Turned out to be a loose connection in the microphone wiring behind the headliner. My mechanic fixed that for about 150 Euro, way cheaper than the control module replacement I needed later. Since your nav and radio are working fine, I'd definitely suggest having them check the microphone and its wiring first. These BMWs from the mid-2000s are known for having issues with the mic connections working loose over time. Would be a shame to replace the whole module if it's just a simple wiring issue. Let me know what you find out, really curious if it's the same problem I had initially. These electronic issues can be such a pain to diagnose!
Thanks so much for that detailed reply! You've actually made me feel a lot better about this situation. I'm definitely going to have my mechanic check the microphone and wiring first, makes total sense to start with the simpler fix, especially since everything else is working fine. Really glad I asked here before jumping straight to replacing expensive parts! It's particularly helpful to know that you had a similar issue with just the mic connection. I'll make sure to mention this specifically to my mechanic. 150 Euro sounds much more manageable than a full control module replacement! Plus, since my BMW's from the same era as yours was, it could very well be the same problem. I'll definitely update once I get it checked out. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's been super helpful in narrowing down where to start looking for the problem!
Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and dealt with a similar issue on my 2004 BMW 3 series. The infotainment system completely died on me, no calls, no audio, nothing. Took it to my trusted workshop and they diagnosed a faulty control module. The whole repair, including parts and labor, set me back about 815 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. Before I can give more specific advice, could you tell me if you're getting any other error messages or if there are other functions not working besides the hands-free calling? Also, did this happen suddenly or was it a gradual issue? I know these systems can be tricky in the older BMW models (my 3 series had its share of electronic quirks). Just for reference, I've also worked on a newer BMW 7 series, and the newer systems are quite different, so knowing these details would help narrow down the possible causes. Let me know these details and I'll try to point you in the right direction!
