BMW 5 Hybrid Transmission Failure: Help Needed

The transmission indicator light comes on

|

Automatic transmission does not shift as usual

Implausible shifting behavior of the automatic transmission

|

Automatic transmission is in emergency mode

Hi all! My 2017 BMW 5 Hybrid is having transmission issues. The transmission warning light is on, and the car's shifting behavior has become erratic. It's stuck in emergency mode and won't shift normally. I suspect worn transmission fluid might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar transmission problems? Would like to know what repairs were needed and how your service center resolved it. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience with hybrids and their quirks. I faced a similar issue with my 2015 BMW 3 Series Hybrid last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, transmission warning, erratic shifting, and emergency mode. I initially thought it was the transmission fluid too, but it turned out to be an undervoltage problem in the electrical system. The workshop diagnosed it with their diagnostic tool, and they had to recalibrate the transmission control module and replace a voltage regulator. Cost me about 240 Euro to fix. Quick question, have you noticed any other warning lights, particularly related to the battery system? Also, when exactly did these symptoms start showing up? This info would help me give you more specific advice about what you might be dealing with. I'd recommend getting it checked at a workshop that specializes in hybrid BMWs. These transmission issues can be tricky, especially when they're related to the hybrid system.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! Last service was done 3 months ago at 59595 KM. Actually, now that you mention the battery system, I've noticed the hybrid battery charge indicator has been a bit inconsistent lately. The transmission issues started right after a cold start last week, and I did see a brief battery warning light that morning, but it disappeared after driving for a few minutes. Your voltage regulator issue sounds similar to what I might be experiencing. Did your car also have any hesitation during acceleration before the problem became more serious? Mine's been doing that occasionally, especially when switching from electric to gas mode. Think I'll take your advice and get it checked by a hybrid specialist. Better safe than sorry with these complex systems!

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details, they're really helpful. Yes, my car definitely had that same hesitation during acceleration before things got worse, especially during that electric-to-gas transition. It's like a brief moment where the car couldn't decide what to do, right? Based on what you're describing with the battery warning and inconsistent charge indicator, I'm even more convinced you're dealing with something similar to what I had. That cold start scenario is particularly familiar, that's exactly how mine started acting up too. The voltage issue tends to show itself more when the system is cold. Quick tip from my experience, when I took mine in, I made sure to tell them about all these little symptoms, especially the battery warning light and the hesitation. It helped them diagnose it faster. The workshop actually showed me how the voltage fluctuations were messing with the transmission control module's ability to make proper shift decisions. I'd get it checked soon though. I waited about a week after noticing the first symptoms, and honestly, it just got more annoying to drive. Plus, you really don't want to risk any damage to the hybrid system, the repair bills can get pretty scary if something major goes wrong! Let me know what they find, I'm really curious if it turns out to be the same issue. These hybrid BMWs are great cars, but they definitely have their quirks!

Thanks so much for all this detailed information! You've been really helpful. Those voltage fluctuations interfering with the transmission control module makes perfect sense given what my car's doing. I've already called a specialized workshop and booked an appointment for tomorrow morning. I made sure to mention all the symptoms we discussed, the battery warning, cold start issues, and that hesitation during power source transitions. I'll definitely get it sorted quickly. You're right about not wanting to risk bigger problems, I love this car and want to keep it running smoothly. The fact that your issue was resolved with a relatively straightforward fix gives me hope that mine won't be too complicated either. I'll update you once I get the diagnosis. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's helped me understand what might be going on and definitely made me feel less worried about the whole situation!
