BMW 5 Hybrid Stalling: Ignition Coil Warning Signs

Shaking while idling

Need advice: BMW 5 Hybrid (2014) ignition coil problems? Hey everyone! I've got a 2014 BMW 5 Hybrid with 86,293 km and I'm dealing with some concerning issues. My car's running rough, stalling at idle, and jerking during acceleration. The check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the ignition coil, but I'm hesitant to go back to my mechanic after a previous bad experience. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their BMW? Did it turn out to be the ignition coil? I'd really appreciate recommendations for dealing with this issue and how much I should expect to pay for the repair. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar situation with my 2017 BMW 3 Series Hybrid last year. The symptoms were identical, rough idle, jerking during acceleration, and the engine light came on. Turned out it wasn't just the ignition coil, the issue was more complex. The main problem was a faulty wiring harness that connected to the ignition coil, which caused intermittent connection issues. The repair involved replacing two ignition coils and the wiring harness. It was quite serious since it could've led to complete engine failure if left unattended. From my experience working with the repair team, these symptoms are pretty common in BMWs when the ignition system starts failing. My advice? Don't drive the car much until it's fixed, as it could damage other components. Also, make sure they check the wiring harness, not just the coils. This isn't a job for a general mechanic, you'll want someone who specializes in BMW electrical systems.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the ignition coils and wiring harness issue. I'm curious, how much did you end up paying for the complete repair? And have you had any similar problems pop up since getting it fixed? My 5 series has been acting up pretty much the same way, and I'm trying to figure out if I need to budget for more than just the ignition coils.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. After taking my 3 Series to the mechanic, it turned out to be simpler than my initial experience. The primary issue was just a defective ignition coil, nowhere near as complicated as I first thought when I replied to you. The total bill came to 95€, which covered fixing the cable connection that was causing all that trouble. Since getting it sorted, my car's been running like a dream, no more jerking, rough idling, or any of those nerve-wracking symptoms. Haven't had a single problem in that department since. Honestly, it was such a relief that it wasn't the more complex wiring harness issue I originally dealt with. Sometimes we fear the worst, but it can turn out to be a straightforward fix. If your 5 Series is showing the same symptoms, you might be looking at a similar simple repair. Though every case is different, so it's best to get it checked out to be sure. Just wanted to give you this positive update, hopefully it helps with your situation!

Thanks for the follow-up! I finally got around to taking my car to a new mechanic yesterday. You were right, it was a relatively simple fix. Had two ignition coils replaced and some minor wiring repairs done. The whole thing cost me around 120€, which was way less than I was dreading. The mechanic was actually great, took the time to show me exactly what was wrong and explained everything clearly. Such a different experience from my last mechanic! The car's running smoothly now, no more jerking or rough idling. The engine light's gone too. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me stop worrying about potentially major issues and just get it sorted. Learned my lesson about not waiting too long when these symptoms show up. Guess sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one! Thanks again for all your help!
