BMW 5 Hybrid Climate Control Issues: Fogging & Heat Failures

Insufficient Cooling/Heating

|

Fault stored

Hi all! Having issues with my 2023 BMW 5 Hybrid, windows keep fogging up badly and heating isn't working properly. Getting error messages on climate control display and system memory. Suspect it might be the defrost air distribution flap. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got it fixed? Would appreciate hearing about repair experiences and workshop solutions.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW 7 Series Hybrid (also saw this on the i4). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. Turned out to be a loose connection in the climate control wiring, the cable harness wasn't properly seated. My workshop found the fault pretty quickly and fixed it by reconnecting and securing the cables properly. Total bill was 95 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then, no more foggy windows or error messages. Can you share which error codes you're getting on the display? Also, does this happen more when you first start the car or after it's been running for a while? This info would help confirm if it's the same issue I had.

Thanks for the detailed response! At 46868 KM and after my latest service, this is my first major issue. The error codes are coming up as F-2344 and F-2346, mostly appearing about 10 minutes into driving. Really helpful to know about your wiring experience, definitely sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. The fogging gets worse during longer drives, which matches what you mentioned. I'll get it checked for loose connections before jumping to bigger repairs. Did you notice any particular symptoms right before the errors started showing up? Mine started acting up pretty suddenly last week.

Hey again! Thanks for sharing those details about your BMW. Those error codes are actually really familiar, they're exactly what I saw on mine before getting it fixed. And yeah, the sudden onset matches my experience too. Just before my issues started, I noticed the climate control fan would sometimes make a slight buzzing sound and the temperature would fluctuate a bit, not sure if you're experiencing that too? In my case, these were the first signs before the full-blown fogging and error messages kicked in. Since our cars are pretty similar (just different series), I'd bet you're dealing with the same wiring issue. The newer BMW hybrids seem to be a bit sensitive when it comes to these connections. My dealer mentioned they've seen quite a few cases like this. One thing I learned, while waiting for the repair appointment, I found that manually adjusting the fan speed rather than leaving it on auto helped reduce the fogging a bit. Not a fix, obviously, but might help you manage until you get it sorted. Let me know how it goes at the workshop. Should be a relatively quick fix if it's the same problem I had.

Thanks so much for all this info! Actually, now that you mention it, I have noticed that slight buzzing sound from the fan recently, just didn't connect the dots until you pointed it out. That's super helpful to know it might be an early warning sign. I've already called my dealer and booked it in for next week. Really relieved to hear it's likely just a wiring issue and not something more serious. I'll definitely try your tip about manually controlling the fan speed in the meantime, anything to help with this annoying fogging situation! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience. It's made me feel much better about the whole thing, knowing it's probably a known issue with a straightforward fix. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted, in case anyone else runs into the same problem with their BMW hybrid.
