BMW 5 Hybrid Battery Woes: Voltage Issues Plague Owner

Engine hard to start

|

Failure of various systems in the vehicle

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hey all, having some trouble with my 2020 BMW 5 Hybrid. The car struggles to start, various systems are failing, and the lights are weak/flickering. Got error codes pointing to undervoltage. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their 5 series hybrid? Really interested in hearing what the actual problem was and how your workshop fixed it. Would appreciate any insights on troubleshooting this issue.

Hey there! I've got some experience with hybrid vehicles and had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW 7 Series Hybrid (also had a 3 Series before that). What you're describing sounds exactly like what I dealt with, weak starts, flickering lights, and system failures. Turned out my hybrid battery was severely discharged and starting to fail. My trusted workshop diagnosed it, and they had to recondition the battery pack plus replace a few cells that were completely dead. The whole thing set me back about 290 Euro, but it's been running perfectly since then. Could you share more details about your car? Like the mileage, how long you've had these symptoms, and whether you've noticed any specific pattern (like issues after the car sits for a few days)? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. Just want to make sure we're not missing anything else that could be causing these symptoms in your 5 Series.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've had my car for about 194981 KM now and just had it serviced last month. The symptoms started about two weeks ago, and yeah, it's definitely worse after the car sits for a few days. Really helpful to hear about your similar experience with the battery pack. Your repair cost sounds way better than what I was worried it might be. Think I'll get it checked out at the workshop this week before it gets any worse. The car's been super reliable until now, so hopefully it's just the battery pack like in your case. Were there any warning signs before your battery completely started failing? Just wondering if I should watch out for anything specific while I wait for my workshop appointment.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get what you're experiencing, it's giving me flashbacks to my situation. Since you mentioned the 194k km mark, I can tell you my issues started around 180k km, so that timing makes sense. Before my battery completely went south, I did notice a few warning signs that I initially ignored (big mistake). About a month before the major issues, I started getting unusual "Check Control" messages, especially after cold starts. The start-stop function also became really inconsistent, sometimes working, sometimes not. The hybrid system would occasionally show reduced power warnings too. What really caught my attention was how the car's electrical systems would act up when I used multiple power-hungry features at once, like when running the AC full blast while using the heated seats. The dashboard would sometimes dim slightly, which I now know was a clear warning sign. Looking back, I wish I'd taken it to the workshop when these first signs showed up. Would've probably saved me some stress! But hey, at least the fix isn't as expensive as we both feared. Just make sure your workshop has experience with hybrid systems, that made a huge difference in my case. Keep me posted on what they find. Fingers crossed it's just the battery pack like mine was!

Thanks so much for those details! That's super helpful, I'm actually seeing a lot of those same warning signs you mentioned. My start-stop has been acting weird too, and I've definitely noticed that dimming issue when running multiple systems. Can't believe I didn't connect those dots earlier! Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this info. Definitely makes me feel better knowing it's probably just the battery pack and not something more serious. I've already called my workshop and got an appointment for later this week. They specialize in hybrids, so hopefully they'll sort it out quickly. I'll keep an eye out for those symptoms you mentioned and make sure to tell the technicians about everything. Thanks again for walking me through your experience, it's been super reassuring knowing someone else has dealt with and solved the same issue!
