BMW 4 Series Fuel Sensor Issues & Stalling Problems

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW 4 diesel. The fuel gauge is stuck, check engine light is on, and the engine keeps stalling at idle. The error log shows a problem, and I suspect it might be the fuel level sensor. Has anyone dealt with this specific issue? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and how your mechanic fixed it. Any tips would be much appreciated.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW 3 series diesel last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, stuck fuel gauge, CEL, and stalling problems. Turned out it was just a blown fuse for the fuel pump circuit. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The fix was straightforward, they replaced the faulty fuse, and everything went back to normal. Total bill was 52 Euro, mostly labor costs since they had to run some diagnostics first. Before you take it in though, what's your exact engine variant and mileage? This could help pinpoint if we're dealing with the same problem. Also, are you getting any specific error codes? Those would be super helpful to know. If it's not the fuse, it could be something more serious with the fuel pump or sensor, but let's start with the basics first.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine is at 145203 KM and just had its service last month. You're right about checking the fuse first, that's a good starting point. I'll definitely look into that before assuming it's the fuel pump or sensor. I'm getting error code P0463, which points to the fuel level sensor circuit. Did you notice any odd behavior with the fuel consumption readings before your fuse issue started? I'm wondering if I should be tracking this as well.

Hey again! Yeah, I remember my situation well. When I had the fuse problem with my BMW 3 series, I actually did notice weird fuel consumption readings about a week before everything went haywire. The onboard computer was showing some really inconsistent numbers, sometimes claiming I was using way more fuel than usual, other times showing barely any consumption at all. That error code P0463 you're getting does sound familiar, though in my case it turned out to be misleading. The system was throwing that code because the blown fuse was preventing proper readings from the fuel sensor circuit. The funny thing is, I initially thought it was definitely the sensor too, and was preparing myself for a much bigger repair bill! Since you mentioned you just had service last month, maybe check if they did anything around the fuel system area? Sometimes these issues can pop up if a connection wasn't properly secured during maintenance. Tell you what, before you do anything else, pop the hood and check fuse number 28 (if I remember correctly). That's the one that controls the fuel pump circuit in these models. It's super easy to spot if it's blown. If that's not it, then yeah, you might be looking at the sensor itself, but at least you'll have ruled out the simple fix first! Let me know what you find. Would be interesting to see if we had the same root cause!

Thanks for the detailed advice! I just checked fuse 28 like you suggested, and surprisingly, it does look a bit discolored! I can't believe it might be something this simple. You've probably saved me a chunk of money and time here. Those weird fuel consumption readings you mentioned match what I've been seeing too, should have mentioned that earlier. Makes total sense now why the numbers were all over the place. I'll get that fuse replaced first thing tomorrow and see if it sorts everything out. Really glad I asked here before heading straight to the dealer, they probably would've jumped straight to replacing the sensor. Super helpful to hear from someone who's been through the same thing. I'll update once I've got it fixed, might help someone else with the same issue down the line!
