BMW 4 Series Engine Vibrations: Mounts or More?

Fault stored

|

Unsteady engine

Hi all! Having some concerns with my 2016 BMW 4 (73k km, gas engine). Getting more vibrations lately and the check engine light popped up. The idle is pretty rough too. I'm thinking it might be the engine mounts going bad. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Did it turn out to be the engine mounts? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and maybe recommendations for handling this issue. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had very similar issues with my 2019 BMW 3 Series last winter. The symptoms you're describing, rough idle, vibrations, and check engine light, actually turned out to be a faulty ignition coil and spark plug connection in my case, not the engine mounts. My mechanic found that the connector housing was cracked, causing a poor connection to the coil. It was causing misfires, which explained the vibrations and rough idle. While it wasn't a major repair, leaving it unfixed could've led to more serious engine problems. Since you mentioned being unsure about your mechanic, I'd suggest getting the diagnostic codes read first, most auto parts stores do this for free. This will give you a better idea of what you're dealing with before choosing where to take it. This isn't typically an expensive fix if it's what I suspect, but you'll want to address it soon to prevent any cascade of issues. Best of luck!

Hey again! Thanks for sharing your experience, that's really helpful to know it was the ignition coil and spark plugs in your case. I'm curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, have you had any similar problems pop up since getting it fixed? I'm thinking I should probably get those diagnostic codes checked out first like you suggested. Really appreciate the advice! Cheers!

Hey there again! Happy to give you an update! I got my BMW sorted at a mechanic and turns out the engine mount was actually the culprit in my case. Got it fixed along with a faulty cable connection. The bill came to 95 € for the cable work, pretty reasonable, I'd say. Since getting it fixed, my car's running smooth as butter, no more weird vibrations or check engine lights. It's like driving a different car! Honestly, such a relief to have it sorted. Those diagnostic codes you got checked yet? They can really point you in the right direction. I know it's nerve-wracking when these things pop up, but once you get to the bottom of it, it's usually not as bad as we fear. Let me know how you get on with yours, always interested to hear if it turns out to be something similar! Take care!

Thanks so much for following up! Thought I'd share what happened with my BMW. Took your advice and got those codes read first, smart move! Turned out I had multiple issues going on. The main problem was actually a combination of worn spark plugs and a damaged ignition coil, plus a slightly torn engine mount. Got it all fixed last week, cost me about €800 total, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. Found a really decent mechanic too, much better than my last one. They actually showed me the old parts and explained everything. Car's running like a dream now, no more shaking or rough idle. Those vibrations that were driving me crazy? Completely gone! Pretty relieved I didn't wait any longer to get it checked out. Really appreciate everyone's help with this. Sometimes it's just good to hear from others who've dealt with similar issues! Take care!
