BMW 4 Series Cruise Control Failure Needs Quick Fix

Cruise control without function

Error message in the speedometer

Fault stored

Hi there! Having trouble with my 2020 BMW 4 Series (31,946 km, gas engine). The cruise control suddenly stopped working, and I'm getting an error message on the speedometer display. The diagnostic system shows there's an error code stored. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar cruise control/speedometer issues on their BMW? What was the cause, and did you find a reliable fix? Thanks in advance for any advice!

Hey there! I faced a similar issue with my 2017 BMW 3 Series last month. The cruise control failure turned out to be a faulty brake pedal position sensor connector. The wiring harness had some corrosion at the connection point, which caused intermittent signal loss. The fix wasn't too complex, the technician cleaned the connector pins and replaced the damaged section of the harness. They also updated the control module software. The whole thing took about 2 hours to diagnose and repair. It wasn't a serious mechanical issue, more of an electrical gremlin. From what you're describing, it sounds pretty similar to what I experienced. The error code should help pinpoint if it's the same sensor problem. My cruise control has been working perfectly since the repair. Hope this helps with your situation.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! The brake pedal sensor issue sounds exactly like what I might be dealing with. Really good to know it wasn't anything too major. How much did the repair end up costing you, if you don't mind me asking? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Cheers!

Hey there! Just wanted to update you, yeah, my repair bill came to 95 € for fixing the cable/plug connection. Turned out it was just a component that wasn't connecting properly, just like I suspected. Really simple fix in the end, and honestly, pretty reasonable cost-wise. The best part? The cruise control has been working like a charm since then, absolutely no issues whatsoever. No quirks, no warning lights, nothing. It's like the problem never existed. I'm actually pretty relieved it wasn't anything more serious. Ya know, sometimes these electrical gremlins can seem really scary at first, but often end up being pretty straightforward fixes. My BMW's been running perfectly since that repair, no complaints at all! Hope this helps give you a better idea of what you might be looking at cost-wise. Let me know how it goes with yours!

Thanks Mark, I actually took your advice and got it checked out yesterday. You were spot on, it was indeed a sensor issue, but in my case, it was a bit more complicated. The technician found that water had gotten into the wiring harness, causing multiple connection problems. They had to replace the entire harness assembly and recalibrate the system. Ended up being pricier than your repair, cost me about 280 € total. But honestly, I'm just glad it's fixed now. The cruise control is working perfectly, and that annoying error message is finally gone. The car feels like new again. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me feel more confident about getting it checked out instead of putting it off. Think I might have found a reliable mechanic too, which is a huge bonus. Thanks again for all your help! Best regards
