BMW 4 Series Convertible problems with misfiring for some time now

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Loss of engine power

Unsteady engine

Shaking while idling

Stalling while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Car won't start

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my BMW 4 Series (built in 2017, gasoline engine). For some time now, it has been showing the following symptoms: black smoke from the exhaust when accelerating, check engine light on, loss of power, unsteady engine, jerking when accelerating, starting problems, high fuel consumption, stalling at idle and shaking at idle. I suspect it could be due to defective ignition coils or misfiring. Has anyone had similar experiences? How did the workshop fix this? I would appreciate any tips and your experiences. Thank you!

Hello, I had similar problems with my BMW 2 Series (2019 model year). I also had black smoke coming out of the exhaust and difficulty accelerating. I have a bit of experience with cars and couldn't solve it myself, so I went to the garage. At the garage, they discovered that the engine control unit was faulty. It was an expensive affair, but after the replacement, which cost me 1000.0 euros, the car ran perfectly again. I would recommend that you have the ignition coils and the engine control unit checked. Can you perhaps give me a few more details about your BMW 4 Series, e.g. how many kilometers it has already covered? Then I might be able to help you even better. Best wishes and good luck!

Hey, thanks for your answer! My 4 currently has 96,543 km on the clock. The last service was about 3 months ago. Did you use a special diagnostic device or just have it checked at the garage? If it was the ECU in your case, that could possibly be an option for me too, although I hope it's something cheaper... Many thanks for your help and tips!

Hey, no problem! Well, I only had the garage check it at the time. My mechanic used a special diagnostic device to read out the error codes. That was pretty helpful because he was able to identify the fault in the engine control unit directly. Of course, it could be something else in your case, but the symptoms are pretty consistent with a problem with the electronics or the ignition coils. If you want to save money yourself, you can also get a simple OBD2 diagnostic device. You can use it to read out the fault codes yourself at home and then look them up on the internet. You might find a clue or two there before you go to the workshop. In the event that it really is the engine control unit, it is best to ask several garages for estimates. Sometimes there are also used or reconditioned control units that are significantly cheaper. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it's nothing too expensive and that your BMW will soon be running smoothly again! Good luck and keep me up to date! Best regards!

Hey, thanks for all the tips and your sympathy! I think I'll actually get an OBD2 diagnostic device to take a look at the error codes myself first. The estimate thing is also a great idea, I'll definitely do that if it really is the engine control unit. Your experience has really helped me and I'm a bit more reassured now. Of course, I'll keep you posted on how things progress. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Best regards!

Hello, can you give us a little more information about your problem?

Zander

The vehicle runs very rough when cold. When it gets warmer, the problem disappears. The problem occurs particularly at cold temperatures. The injectors have already been replaced. The problem then returned relatively quickly.

Hello Zander, What kind of car are you driving? Have you ever checked whether the high-pressure pump is working properly?

An E92 N53. It is always cylinder 6, which is often found on the net. The pump has not been conspicuous so far.
