BMW 4 Series Brake Warning Signs: Need Urgent Help

Spongy/unresponsive brakes

Hey all! Need some advice about my 2014 BMW 4 Series (gas, 22921 km). My brake warning light just came on, and the infotainment system is showing warnings too. The brake pedal feels weird when I press it. I think it might be low brake fluid, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and did you find a trustworthy mechanic to fix it? Thanks in advance for any tips!

I had nearly identical symptoms with my 2015 BMW 3 Series last year. The mushy brake pedal and warning lights were classic signs of worn brake pads and rotors. Had them checked at my regular garage, both front rotors were badly scored and the pads were down to metal. The mechanic showed me how the wear indicators had triggered the dashboard warnings. Got the full brake service done, new pads, rotors, and fluid change. It was definitely serious since worn brakes are a major safety issue. My advice is don't delay getting it checked out. Those warning systems are there for a reason. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, and given your mileage, it's likely time for brake maintenance. A good mechanic will show you the worn parts and explain what needs fixing. Don't risk driving with questionable brakes.

Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with right now! Just had mine fixed yesterday actually. Really helpful to know I wasn't the only one with those warning lights and that weird pedal feel. Do you remember roughly what you ended up paying for the full brake service? And has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or did you notice any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Yeah, after my brake service last year, including the fluid top-up, I paid around 480 € for the whole job. That covered new pads, rotors, and labor, pretty standard price for BMW brake work from what I gathered. Everything's been running perfectly since then, no more warning lights or that scary mushy pedal feel! The brake fluid level warning was definitely resolved once they did the full service. Honestly, it's like driving a different car now, the brakes are nice and firm, totally confidence-inspiring. Just make sure you keep an eye on the brake wear indicators going forward. These BMWs are pretty good at letting us know when maintenance is needed, but it's always good to stay ahead of it. My car's been trouble-free since the repair, and I'm sure yours will be too now that you've had it fixed.

Just wanted to update everyone! Took it to a new mechanic yesterday and really happy with how it turned out. The whole brake service cost me about 520 €, bit more than expected but worth every penny. The mechanic was super transparent, showed me the worn-out pads and scored rotors, and explained everything before starting the work. Funny thing is, I was so nervous about going to a new place, but this guy turned out to be fantastic. He even caught a small issue with the brake sensor wire that could've caused problems later. Now the car feels amazing to drive, brake pedal's firm again, and all those annoying warning lights are gone. Thanks again for all the advice! Definitely learned my lesson about not waiting too long when those warning lights pop up. Time to put that bad experience with my old mechanic behind me, looks like I've found my new go-to shop!
