BMW 4 Diesel Height Control System Issues & Warning Lights

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Hi everyone! Having some weird issues with my 2020 BMW 4 diesel. The warning light in the dash is on, headlights aren't aligned properly, and there's a noticeable height difference between front and rear. Error code stored in memory. I suspect it might be related to height control system. Has anyone experienced something similar? Would really appreciate hearing about how your workshop fixed it and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars, and I actually faced a similar issue with my 2018 BMW 5 Series diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound very familiar. For me, it turned out to be a faulty control rod sensor that was causing the height control system to malfunction. Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The repair cost me around 110 Euro, and it fixed all those symptoms, the warning light, misaligned headlights, and the uneven height. To help you better, could you share: Which specific error code you're getting? How long has this been happening? Does the height difference change when the car is running vs. parked? Just want to make sure you're not dealing with something different since these systems can be tricky.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I'm dealing with error code P1B4A currently. This issue started about a week ago, and yes, the height actually does fluctuate between parked and running states. My car's got 71017 KM on the clock and just had its service last month, but this problem just popped up out of nowhere. I'm hopeful it's just the sensor like in your case, that repair cost sounds way better than what I was worried it might be! Going to get it checked out at the workshop next week, but was curious to hear about similar experiences first.

Hey again! Thanks for providing those details. Yeah, after seeing your error code and hearing about the fluctuating height, I'm even more convinced it's similar to what I dealt with. My car had about 65000 KM when it happened, so pretty close to your situation. The P1B4A code is exactly what my BMW showed too. I remember being super relieved when it turned out to be just the sensor, I was honestly freaking out thinking it might be the whole air suspension system! Quick tip from my experience, when my workshop replaced the sensor, they also checked the connecting wires because apparently these can get corroded or damaged over time. In my case, they found a bit of corrosion and cleaned it up while they were in there. Might be worth asking them to check that too when you take it in. Just keep an eye on it until your workshop appointment. If you notice the height difference getting significantly worse or any new weird noises, might be worth getting it in sooner. But from what you've described, it sounds pretty much identical to what I went through. Let us know how it turns out at the workshop! Always good to know what these things end up being, helps everyone in the community.

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! It's really reassuring to hear your experience was so similar, same error code and everything. That's such a good tip about checking the wires too, I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. I've been keeping a close eye on it since we talked, and thankfully it hasn't gotten any worse. The height's still doing that weird fluctuation thing, but no new noises or issues have popped up. I feel way less stressed about the whole situation now. Was seriously worried I'd need to get the entire suspension system replaced or something equally expensive! Will definitely update here once I get it sorted at the workshop next week. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and tips, it's exactly what I was hoping to learn when I posted this question. Just one quick question before I go, did you drive your car much between noticing the issue and getting it fixed? Trying to decide if I should minimize driving it until the appointment.
