BMW 3 Series model year 2008 diesel: Engine control light flashes, fault memory full, workshop visit required

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Car won't start

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Fault stored

Hello, I'm currently having massive problems with my BMW 3 Series, built in 2008, diesel, which has now covered a good 102,384 km. The check engine light is constantly flashing, the engine is losing power and running erratically, sometimes even switching itself off. Sometimes the car won't even start. There is also a warning light in the speedometer and the fault memory is full. I suspect a fault in the engine control unit, but I'm not sure. Has anyone here had similar problems with their car? How did you deal with it and what did you experience at the mechanic? I'm coming from a really bad last visit to the garage and would appreciate your experience and advice. Thanks in advance for your support!

Hey, I recently had exactly the same problems with my 2011 BMW 5 Series. The check engine light flashes like yours, the engine ran irregularly and sometimes it wouldn't start at all. So I know this very well. At the mechanic they found out that there was a problem with the injection system. It was quite a bit of work to get everything sorted, but it wasn't a disaster. It was a bit of a pain, but now it's running smoothly again. Hope that helps you a little. Good luck!

Hey, man, sounds like you've been through exactly the same thing. Injection system, eh? That's another idea, but I wouldn't have thought of it right away. Do you happen to remember how much the fun at the mechanic cost you? And has there been any other problem with the car since then, or is everything running smoothly again now? Do you think it could be something like that with my 3 Series? Thank you!

Hey, that's right, the situation was pretty similar! After I went to the mechanic, the problem with the fault in the engine control unit was finally resolved. It was the affected component that was faulty. The repair cost me a total of €625, not exactly cheap, but since then everything has been back to normal. Regarding your 3 Series, it could of course be something similar, but only a professional can say for sure. But so far my car is running smoothly again and there have been no further incidents. I hope this helps you a bit and that you can get your car running again soon! Good luck!

Hey, oh my goodness, that sounds like a lot of work and, above all, expensive. But hey, if it runs again and no further problems occur, it's worth the investment. Very reassuring to hear that your car is running well again. I'll also point out the injection system to the mechanic, maybe that's the problem. Your experience really helps me. Many thanks for your help!
