BMW 3 Series Hybrid Problems: Stalling & Power Loss Help

Stalling while idling

Loss of engine power

Check engine light on

Hi everyone! Need help with my 2020 BMW 3 Series Hybrid. Having serious performance issues, engine stalling, unstable idle, sluggish acceleration, reduced power, and the check engine light is on. I suspect the fuel volume regulator might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Particularly interested in hearing about repair experiences and workshop solutions that worked for you. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and went through something very similar with my 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. In my case, it turned out to be a defective high pressure pump. Had to take it to a workshop and they diagnosed it after running some tests. The repair wasn't cheap, set me back around 1510 Euro, but it fixed all those issues completely. No more stalling, power loss, or warning lights since then. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Current mileage on your car? Any recent maintenance work done? Are there any other warning messages on the dash? This would help me understand if you're dealing with the same issue I had. The 3 Series and 5 Series share quite a few components, so my experience might be relevant to your situation. Let me know these details and I'll share more specific info about the repair process.

Thanks for your detailed response! I'm at 52,170 KM, and just had my service done last month. No other warning lights besides the check engine light. Your suggestion about the high pressure pump is really interesting, the symptoms do sound identical. Did you notice any specific timing with when the issues would occur? Like during acceleration or after the engine warms up? I'm trying to gather as much info as possible before taking it to the workshop, and your experience with a similar BMW hybrid setup is super helpful.

Hey again! Yes, absolutely, now that you mention the timing, I definitely noticed some patterns with my 5 Series. The issues were most noticeable when the engine was warm, especially during those first few seconds of acceleration. It was really frustrating because the car would hesitate badly when trying to merge onto highways. At your mileage (mine was around 48,000 KM when it happened), it's definitely following the same pattern I experienced. The fact that you recently had service done and still have these issues makes me even more convinced it's the high pressure pump. In my case, the regular service checks didn't catch it because the problem would come and go. One thing I didn't mention before, before I got it fixed, I tried using premium fuel for a few tanks thinking it might help, but it made zero difference. The mechanics later told me this was because the pump wasn't maintaining proper fuel pressure, regardless of fuel quality. The repair took about a day and a half in total, but honestly, it was worth every penny because the car has been running like new since then. If you decide to get it checked, make sure they do a proper pressure test on the fuel system, that's what confirmed the issue in my case. Would you like me to share the specific part number they used for my repair? Might be helpful when you talk to your workshop.

I'll write the final response Thanks so much for all this detailed info! That's super helpful about the warm engine and acceleration issues, it's exactly what I'm experiencing, especially that hesitation during merges. Really good to know about the premium fuel too, as I was actually considering trying that next. Yes, I'd really appreciate that part number when you have a chance. I've already called my workshop to book an appointment for next week, and I'll definitely make sure they do that pressure test you mentioned. It's such a relief to hear your car's running perfectly after the repair, makes me feel a lot better about potentially spending that kind of money to fix it. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. It's given me a much clearer picture of what I might be dealing with, and I feel much more prepared for my workshop visit now. I'll update you on what they find when I get it checked out. Thanks again for all your help!
