BMW 3 Series Diesel Injection Woes Spark Power Loss

Stalling while idling

|

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Loss of engine power

|

Poor fuel economy

"Need advice: BMW 3 Series (2003) Diesel acting up badly! My 3 Series with 86k kilometers is giving me nightmares lately. Engine jerks during driving, drinks way more fuel than usual, and has noticeable power loss. It's also stalling at idle and blowing smoke when I accelerate. Had a bad experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Pretty sure it's injection-related, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. What was your diagnosis and how much did the repair cost? Any recommendations for dealing with this?"

Had similar issues with my BMW 325d (2006). Just dealt with this last month at the garage. The symptoms matched yours exactly, jerky acceleration, increased fuel consumption, and power loss. Turned out the wiring harness for the fuel injectors was damaged, causing inconsistent signals. The connector plugs were corroded and one wire was partially broken. Bad connection meant the injectors weren't firing properly, hence all those symptoms you're describing. The fix wasn't that serious compared to actual injector failure. They had to replace the wiring harness and clean the connector points. While they were at it, they checked the injectors themselves, they were fine, thankfully. Just a heads up, don't wait too long on this. Running with faulty injector signals can potentially damage other components. Get it checked soon, preferably at a shop that specializes in diesel engines. Took about half a day to fix mine completely.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since I've been worried it might be something more serious like complete injector failure. Sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, just curious, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm planning to take mine in next week, trying to get an idea of what to expect cost-wise.

Hey there! Glad I could help earlier, and yes, absolutely happy to share the repair costs and how things have been running since. I got really lucky because it turned out to be just that faulty cable connection to the injection system, which set me back 95 €. Much better than what I was initially fearing! I was dreading having to replace the entire injection system, which would've been way more expensive. Since getting it fixed, my BMW's been running like a dream, no more jerking, no more excessive fuel consumption, and the power's back to normal. It's been about six weeks now, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. The smoke during acceleration is completely gone too. Honestly, it was such a relief that it turned out to be just a connection problem. My advice would be to get it checked soon, these symptoms can be pretty misleading, and you might be worrying about something major when it could be relatively simple to fix, just like mine was. Fingers crossed you'll have a similar outcome!

Just got back from the mechanic and wow, what a relief! You were spot on, it was actually an electrical issue with the injection system. Had a different problem than yours though. Turned out some rodent had chewed through part of the wiring, causing all those symptoms. The repair cost me a bit more, around 180 for parts and labor, but honestly, I'm just happy it wasn't a complete injector replacement. They showed me the damaged wiring, pretty crazy how such a small thing can cause so much trouble! The car's running beautifully now. No more jerking, smoke's gone, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Took it for a good test drive and it feels like a completely different car. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me stay calm about the whole situation instead of assuming the worst. Now I know exactly what to look out for in the future!
