Thanks so much for sharing your experience, that's really helpful! I had no idea the wiring harness could be part of the problem. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything stayed working properly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Really want to make sure I get this fixed right the first time, so knowing what to expect would be super helpful.
Hey there! Glad I could help with the info! Just to update you, I actually got this sorted last week. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed the clutch pedal switch causing all those issues, and they found a bad connection in the wiring that was throwing everything off. The total bill came to 95€, much cheaper than I initially feared! They basically had to fix a dodgy cable connection to the switch, and since then, everything's been working perfectly. No more wonky starts, cruise control's back to normal, and the gear display is spot on. Haven't had a single problem since the repair. It's actually pretty amazing how one small electrical issue can mess with so many different systems! My advice would be to get it checked out sooner rather than later, these things can sometimes get worse if left too long. I remember being worried like you about getting it fixed right, but honestly, once they found the actual problem, it was a pretty straightforward repair. Just make sure they do a proper diagnostic check first. The peace of mind is totally worth it! Let me know how you get on with yours. Always happy to share more details if you need them!
Thanks for sharing those details! Just wanted to update everyone on what happened with my BMW. Finally got it sorted at a mechanic I found through a. Took it in last Monday, and turns out was spot-on, it was definitely the clutch pedal switch issue. The mechanic found some corroded wiring and a failing sensor. Got it all fixed up, new sensor, fresh wiring, the works. Cost me about 120€ total, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. Everything's working perfectly now, no more starting without the clutch, cruise control's back to life, and the gear display is clear as day. Really glad I didn't put it off any longer. Have to say, I'm relieved I didn't go back to my old mechanic. The new place did a thorough job explaining everything and showed me exactly what was wrong. Been driving for a week now with zero issues. Thanks again for the advice, really helped me know what to expect and what to ask for when I took it in!
Had the exact same issue with my 2015 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last year. The clutch pedal position sensor was the culprit in my case. The symptoms were identical, startup without clutch, cruise control failure, and gear indicator problems. Turned out the wiring harness had deteriorated and the connection to the sensor was faulty. My garage found the stored error code right away. They had to replace the entire sensor assembly and rewire the connection. It wasn't a major repair in terms of mechanical work, but it was crucial for safety since the sensor's a key safety component. The tricky part was diagnosing it correctly. Some shops might just replace the sensor without checking the wiring, which won't solve the issue long-term. Make sure they do a complete diagnostic of the electrical system, not just the sensor itself. Once fixed, everything went back to normal, proper starts, working cruise control, and accurate gear display. Definitely get it checked soon since it affects multiple safety systems.
