Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the control module and wiring issues. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other steering problems since getting it fixed? Always good to know what to expect down the road with these hybrids.
Hey again! Just wanted to update you, I actually got this fixed last week and I'm happy to report the steering is working perfectly now! The repair was way simpler and cheaper than I initially feared. Turned out it was just a faulty cable connection to the power steering component that needed fixing. Only cost me 95 €, what a relief! Much better than what I was expecting after my experience. Since the repair, the steering's been absolutely spot-on, no more vibrations, warning lights, or heavy steering. It feels just like new again. Haven't had a single issue since then. These hybrids are pretty solid once you get the little gremlins sorted out. Really glad I didn't put off getting it checked. If you're still having the same problems, I'd definitely recommend getting it looked at sooner rather than later. Better safe than sorry with steering issues! Let me know if you need any other info about my experience with the repair. Always happy to help out a fellow BMW owner!
Following up on this thread to share what happened with my BMW. I finally took it to a mechanic last week after getting more concerned about the steering. Really glad I asked here first! Turned out the issue was pretty similar to what you experienced. The mechanic found some damaged wiring near the power steering module. He showed me where moisture had gotten in and caused corrosion. Cost me about 250 bucks total for the repair, a bit more than yours but still not terrible. The steering feels amazing now, all the vibration is gone and the power assist is working perfectly. Such a relief after weeks of wrestling with that heavy steering! Should've gotten it checked sooner instead of worrying about finding the right mechanic. Thanks again for sharing your experience. It really helped me understand what might be wrong and gave me the push I needed to get it fixed. These hybrids are great cars when everything's working right! Just wanted to close the loop so others with similar issues know what to expect. Really appreciate everyone's help here!
Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last winter. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, heavy steering, vibrations, and warning lights. Took it to the garage and it turned out the power steering control module had corroded connections. The main plug was badly oxidized, and moisture had gotten into the wiring harness. Really glad I caught it early because it could've led to complete steering assist failure, which is pretty serious on these cars. The fix wasn't too complex, they had to clean the connections, replace the damaged wiring section, and reseal the module. The steering came back immediately after the repair, smooth as new. Don't wait on this one, faulty power steering can become a safety issue. Make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW hybrid systems, as the steering setup is different from regular models. Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Let us know how it turns out.
