BMW 3 Hybrid Loss of Power: Throttle Issues Reported

Check engine light on

|

Loss of engine power

Hi everyone! My 2021 BMW 3 Hybrid is acting up. Engine power dropped significantly, idle speed is higher than normal, and the accelerator pedal isn't responding. Engine light is on and the car went into limp mode. I suspect it might be the throttle valve, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and went through something very similar with my 2019 BMW 5 Series Hybrid (I also own a regular BMW X3). This sounds exactly like what I dealt with last summer. The symptoms match perfectly, sluggish response, high idle, and that annoying limp mode. In my case, it turned out to be a faulty accelerator pedal module. The electronics inside were acting up, causing all those issues. Had it fixed at my regular workshop, they diagnosed it quickly and replaced the module. The whole thing, including labor, cost me about 265 Euro. Car's been running perfectly since then. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Any error codes you're getting? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? Are there any other warning lights besides the engine light? This would help confirm if you're dealing with the same issue I had.

Thanks for the detailed response! I'm having these issues at 134,685 KM on my 3 Series. The problems actually happen regardless of engine temperature. Getting error code P2135 on my scanner. The weird thing is that it started suddenly during my latest drive, right after my recent service. The Check Engine light is the only warning showing up right now. I'm relieved to hear your fix was relatively straightforward with the pedal module. I was worried it might be something more serious with the throttle body, which would've been much more expensive. I'll definitely get it checked out at the workshop and mention your experience with the pedal module. Really appreciate you sharing this info, gives me some hope that it won't break the bank!

Hey again! Always happy to help a fellow BMW owner. You mentioning it started right after your service really rings a bell, that's exactly what happened with mine too! The error code P2135 is actually what I got as well, which typically points to a throttle position sensor circuit issue. Initially, I also thought it was the throttle body (which had me worried about the cost), but my mechanic found that the accelerator pedal module was the culprit. In your case, since it started after service, I wouldn't be surprised if something got disconnected or if there was some electronic interference during the maintenance work. Just to share a bit more from my experience, when they replaced my pedal module, they also checked all the connections and wiring harness just to be safe. Turns out there was also a slightly loose connection that they fixed during the same visit. Whole thing took about 2 hours. Quick tip: while you're waiting to get it fixed, if you experience the limp mode, sometimes turning the car off completely for about 5 minutes and restarting helps temporarily, worked for me as a Band-Aid solution until I could get it to the shop. Keep us posted on what you find out! Always curious to know if these issues turn out the same way.

Thanks so much for all this helpful information! That's super interesting that you had the same issue after service, makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone in this. I actually tried your tip about turning off the car for 5 minutes when it went into limp mode on my way home, and surprisingly, it did help temporarily! I've booked it in at my workshop for tomorrow morning. I've mentioned everything you shared about the pedal module and the P2135 code. The mechanic seemed to think you might be right, especially given the timing with the recent service. He's going to check the connections first before replacing any parts. Really grateful for your detailed responses and sharing your experience. You've saved me a lot of worry and probably some money too, I was convinced I'd need a whole new throttle body! Will definitely update this thread once I get the diagnosis and repair done. Thanks again for taking the time to help out!
