Headlamp leveller malfunction

Need advice: Bad headlight leveling on 2011 BMW 3 Hybrid Hey everyone! My BMW 3 Hybrid (2011, 47k km) is giving me headaches. Check engine light is on, and the headlights are misbehaving, pointing either too high or too low. Scanner shows a headlight range control error. Had a sketchy experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar headlight issues on their BMW? What was the fix, and how much did it cost? Any trusted mechanic recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I had the exact same issue with my 2014 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last month. The headlight leveling system was acting up, and the symptoms matched yours perfectly, unusual pointing angles and that annoying check engine light. Took it to the garage, turned out the headlight servomotor was failing. The mechanic showed me how the motor wasn't responding properly to the level sensor inputs. It wasn't a major repair, but definitely not something you want to ignore since proper headlight alignment is crucial for safety. The fix involved replacing the faulty servomotor and recalibrating the headlight leveling system. The whole process took about 2 hours. Just make sure you get this checked soon, driving with misaligned headlights can be dangerous, especially at night. I'd suggest going to an authorized BMW service center for this specific issue since they have the right diagnostic tools.

Thanks for sharing this, really helpful! I'm about to book in my car for this exact repair. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the servomotor replacement and calibration? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Glad I could help earlier! Yeah, I actually just got my car back last week, and I can tell you the exact cost, it was 1040 € to fix the defective servomotor in the headlight. And I've got good news, everything's working perfectly now! The headlight range control fault is completely gone, and the headlights are behaving exactly as they should. I know it wasn't exactly cheap, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The headlights now stay exactly where they should, no more unusual pointing up and down, and that annoying check engine light has stayed off. It's such a relief not having to worry about blinding other drivers or not being able to see properly at night. Trust me, getting it fixed at a proper place is the way to go. I learned my lesson about trying to save money with sketchy mechanics in the past. With something as important as headlights, you really want it done right the first time. Let me know how it goes when you get yours fixed!

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update you. You were spot on about everything! Finally bit the bullet and took it to a certified service center. The total came to 980 €, which was actually a bit less than what you paid. The experience was way better than my last mechanic. These guys really knew their stuff, walked me through exactly what they were doing and even showed me the old servomotor. Could actually see how worn out it was! The whole thing took about 2.5 hours, but they got me a courtesy coffee while I waited. Took it for a night drive yesterday, and what a difference! The headlights stay perfectly aligned now, check engine light is gone, and I'm not getting any more angry flashes from oncoming traffic. Should've done this weeks ago instead of stressing about it. Thanks again for pushing me to get it properly fixed. You saved me from probably making another dodgy mechanic mistake!
