BMW 3 Diesel Cold Start Issues: Glow Plug Warning Signs

Fault stored

|

Pre-glow light won't turn off

Hi all! Having some trouble with my 2017 BMW 3 diesel (112k km) and need your insight. My glow plug indicator stays on, and the car's really struggling to start when it's cold outside. Battery seems to drain more than usual during start-up, and there's an error code stored. Pretty sure it's the glow plugs, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'd love to hear from others who've dealt with similar issues. Any recommendations on the repair and rough cost estimates would be great! Thanks in advance

I had the exact same issue with my 2014 BMW 5 Series diesel last winter. The glow plug warning stayed on and cold starts were terrible, the engine would crank forever before starting. After taking it to the garage, they found two completely failed glow plugs and another one was on its way out. They replaced all glow plugs as a set since they tend to wear at similar rates. The mechanic also checked the glow plug control module, but that was fine. It was a fairly straightforward fix, but ignoring glow plug issues can lead to starting problems in cold weather and potentially damage other components. I wouldn't delay getting it checked, the symptoms you're describing are classic glow plug failure signs. Just know the repair isn't too complex for an experienced mechanic, but make sure they use genuine parts. Since your car has similar mileage to what mine had, it's probably about time for a glow plug replacement anyway.

Thanks for sharing your experience, that's really helpful! I'm relieved to hear it was a straightforward fix. My symptoms sound identical to what you experienced. Been putting off taking it to the shop but you're right, probably shouldn't wait too long. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the full set replacement? Just trying to budget for it. Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or did you notice any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. I paid 440 € for the complete glow plug replacement, including parts and labor. Honestly, it was worth every penny, my BMW's been running like a champ since the fix. The cold starts are smooth now, no more endless cranking or warning lights. The repair sorted out all those annoying starting issues I mentioned before. The battery's not struggling anymore during start-up, and that persistent glow plug indicator finally went away. It's such a relief not having to cross my fingers every time I start the car on a cold morning! Just like I said before, getting genuine parts was key. The mechanic did a great job, and I haven't had a single related problem since the repair. If you're still on the fence about getting it done, I'd say go for it, it's definitely cheaper than dealing with potential damage from leaving it too long. Hope this helps with your budgeting! Trust me, you'll notice the difference right away once it's fixed.

Thanks so much for all the details! You've really put my mind at ease about this whole situation. I actually just got back from a reputable mechanic who fixed it yesterday, and I'm so glad I didn't wait any longer. Funny story, when I pulled into the shop, my car made this awful struggling noise, which was pretty embarrassing! The mechanic just smiled and said he'd heard that sound many times before. The repair cost was similar to what you paid, and theyaged to get it done in just a few hours. Started the car this morning and wow, what a difference! No more warning light, quick start-up, and the engine sounds much smoother. The mechanic even showed me the old glow plugs, and they were completely shot. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it. Really appreciate everyone's help on this. It's great to have my car running properly again, especially with the colder weather coming up.
