BMW 3 Convertible Top and Sunroof Both Stuck, Help Needed

Sunblind gets stuck in one position

|

Convertible top cannot be opened or closed

Need help with BMW 3 (2004) sunroof and convertible issues Having trouble with my 2004 BMW 3. The sunblind is stuck and convertible top won't move at all. Getting a sunroof not initialized error. Has anyone dealt with this before? Mainly interested in what repairs were done and how much it cost to fix. Any tips would be appreciated.

I've got some experience working on BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2006 BMW 3 Series (also owned a 7 Series before). The symptoms sound really familiar! My sunroof was completely stuck and showed the same error message. Took it to my regular workshop and they discovered it needed a recoding of the sunroof/convertible module. The sensors had lost their calibration points. The fix was pretty straightforward, they hooked it up to their diagnostic computer and did a complete module reset and recoding. Cost me 75 Euro and took about an hour. Been working perfectly since then. Could you share if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, does the top make any noise when you try to operate it? This would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My car has only done 48428 KM and had its last service recently, so I wasn't expecting these kinds of issues yet. When I try to operate the top, there's absolutely no noise or movement, it's completely dead. Unfortunately, I don't have any specific error codes to share, just that "not initialized" message on the display. Your solution sounds promising and way less expensive than I feared! Did you need to do any mechanical work after the recoding, or was the computer reset enough to sort everything out? Really hoping it's just a calibration issue like yours was.

Hey there again! I feel your frustration, these things always seem to happen regardless of mileage! I hear you about being caught off guard, especially after a recent service. Actually, in my case, the computer reset was all it needed, no mechanical work required at all. Just pure electronics and recalibration stuff. When mine was acting up, it was also completely silent like yours, no clicks, no motor noise, nothing. That's actually a good sign because when there's grinding or weird noises, that usually means mechanical problems, which gets way more expensive. The fact that you're getting the same "not initialized" message that I had makes me even more confident it's probably the same issue. After the reset, they ran a full cycle test right there in the shop, opened and closed everything multiple times to make sure all the sensors were properly calibrated. Quick tip though, if you're planning to get it fixed, try to do it sooner rather than later. I've heard leaving these electronic gremlins too long can sometimes lead to other problems. But honestly, it sounds exactly like what I dealt with, so hopefully you'll be back to enjoying your convertible with just a simple reset! Want me to share the specific diagnostic steps my mechanic took? Might be helpful to know what to expect when you take it in.

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! That's a huge relief to hear it was just a reset job in your case. I'll definitely take your advice and get it looked at ASAP, don't want to risk any additional problems. And yes, please share those diagnostic steps! Would be super helpful to know what to expect and make sure the mechanic doesn't try to upsell me on unnecessary repairs. Really appreciate you taking the time to help out. Makes me feel a lot better knowing someone else has successfully dealt with the exact same issue. I'll book it in tomorrow and hopefully will be back to enjoying the sun soon! Thanks again for all your help!
