BMW 2-Series: Speedometer & Headlight Control Issues?

Fault stored

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Headlamp leveller malfunction

Hey everyone! My 2017 BMW 2 Series has been acting up lately. The speedometer warning light is on, there's a stored error code, and the low beams are pointing either too high or too low. I suspect it's related to the headlight range control system. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Mainly interested in hearing about repair solutions and workshop experiences. Thanks for any insights!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and faced a similar issue with my 2015 BMW 3 Series. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with last year. After several warning lights and inconsistent headlight levels, it turned out to be a faulty servomotor in the headlight assembly. The repair cost me around 1040 Euro at the workshop, not cheap, but it solved the problem completely. The workshop diagnosed it quickly and had to replace the entire servomotor unit. Took them about 3-4 hours to fix it. Since then, everything's been working perfectly. Could you share your exact engine type and whether this happens on both headlights or just one side? This would help me provide more specific advice based on my experience.

Thanks for the feedback! My 2 Series has done 125769 KM and just had its service last month. The issue is happening on both headlights actually. Been a bit worried about the repair costs, but it sounds like I'll need to bite the bullet and get that servomotor checked out. Did you notice if your warning lights started intermittently at first? Mine seem to come and go, especially during nighttime driving. The error code keeps popping up even after clearing it with my OBD scanner.

Hey again! Good to hear back from you. Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what happened with my BMW too. The warning lights were super inconsistent at first, they'd show up during night drives and sometimes clear themselves, only to come back a few days later. Really annoying stuff! I kept clearing the error codes with my scanner too, but they just kept coming back. It's actually pretty typical behavior for a failing headlight servomotor. Since both your headlights are acting up, it sounds even more similar to what I experienced. With your mileage being pretty close to what mine was when it happened (I was around 130000 KM), it's likely the same issue. These servomotors tend to wear out around this point. One thing I learned from my experience, don't wait too long to get it fixed. I tried to ignore it for a while, but it only got worse and started affecting the auto-leveling more frequently. Plus, having incorrectly aimed headlights isn't great for nighttime driving. The repair cost isn't fun, but at least it's a pretty straightforward fix once you get it to the workshop. Have you noticed any weird noises when the headlights are adjusting? That was another symptom I had before getting mine fixed.

I really appreciate all the detailed information! Yes, I've actually started hearing a slight grinding noise when the headlights adjust, especially when I first start the car. That's another sign pointing to the servomotor issue you mentioned. I've booked an appointment with my mechanic for next week. You're right about not waiting, I've been noticing more and more oncoming drivers flashing their lights at me, probably because my beams are misaligned. Better to fix it now before it becomes a bigger problem or causes any safety issues. Thanks for sharing your repair costs too, helps me budget for what's coming. Hopefully, they can get it sorted in a similar timeframe to yours. The symptoms match up so perfectly with what you experienced, I'm pretty confident this is the same issue. Really glad I asked about this here, it's super helpful to hear from someone who's already been through it! I'll probably update this thread after the repair for anyone else who might run into the same problem with their BMW in the future. Thanks again for all your help!
