BMW 2 Series: Multiple Issues Point to Boost Sensor Fault

Whistling noise

Loss of engine power

Stalling while idling

Check engine light on

Jerking on acceleration

Loud hissing on acceleration

Poor fuel economy

My 2017 BMW 2 diesel is acting up pretty badly. I've got multiple issues including check engine, jerking during acceleration, whistling/hissing sounds, stalling at idle, high fuel usage, and power loss. I suspect it's the boost pressure sensor but want to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone else faced this? What did your workshop diagnose and how was it fixed?

Hi there! I have some experience working on cars and had a very similar issue with my 2015 BMW 1 Series diesel last year. Those symptoms sound really familiar, I went through exactly the same headache with mine. After taking it to my regular workshop, they found that the boost pressure sensor connection was loose, causing all those problems you described. The cable harness connecting to the sensor was damaged and needed replacing. Cost me 95 Euro for the repair, and it fixed everything, no more jerking, whistling, or power issues. To help you better, what's the mileage on your 2 Series? Also, have you noticed if these issues get worse in any particular conditions (cold starts, highway driving, etc.)? Best of luck sorting this out! Let me know if you need any other details about my experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 2 had its latest service about 3 months ago, and I'm currently at 125205 KM. I've noticed the issues are definitely worse during cold starts and when accelerating hard on the highway. The whistling noise is particularly loud when going uphill. After reading your post, I'm even more convinced it's the boost pressure sensor. I'll have my mechanic check the cable harness connection first, great tip on that! Really appreciate the detailed response about your similar experience.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your 2 Series. Yeah, those symptoms you're describing, especially the whistling during uphill drives, are exactly what I experienced with my 1 Series! You know what's interesting? My issues also started about 3-4 months after a regular service, just like yours. I was at around 130,000 KM when it happened, so we're in a similar ballpark mileage-wise. The cold start problems and highway acceleration issues were my biggest headaches too. Quick tip from my experience, when my mechanic checked the harness, they actually found some minor corrosion on the connector pins too, not just the loose connection. They cleaned those up while replacing the harness, and it made a huge difference. Might be worth asking your mechanic to check that as well. Since you mentioned the particularly loud whistling on inclines, that's a classic sign of boost pressure issues. Mine used to sound like a kettle boiling when going uphill! After the fix, it was like driving a completely different car. Keep me posted on what your mechanic finds. I'm really curious to know if it turns out to be the same issue as mine!

Thanks so much for all that extra insight! It's honestly such a relief to hear from someone who's been through the exact same thing. The fact that your issues also started a few months after servicing and around the same mileage really makes me feel better about my diagnosis. That tip about the corroded connector pins is super helpful, I'll definitely mention that to my mechanic when I take it in next week. You totally nailed it with the kettle comparison! That's exactly what it sounds like when I'm going uphill. Can't wait to get this sorted out. It's been so stressful driving around wondering if the car's going to act up, especially on the highway. I'll definitely update you once my mechanic takes a look at it. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all these details about your experience, it's been incredibly helpful!
