BMW 2 Series Soft Top Fails: Hall Sensor Alert

Convertible top cannot be opened or closed

|

Fault stored

"Hi all! Having issues with my 2022 BMW 2 Series convertible (51K km, diesel). The soft top is acting up, stops out of nowhere while operating, sometimes won't move at all, and there's a red flashing light on the switch. The diagnostic showed a hall sensor error. Has anyone dealt with this? Really want to avoid another bad mechanic experience, so I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences and maybe recommendations for fixing this issue. Thanks!"

I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW 4 Series diesel last winter. The convertible top was giving me the same symptoms, unusual stops and that annoying red flash. Turned out it wasn't just the hall sensor. The wiring harness had some damaged cables and poor connections near the folding mechanism. Got it checked at the garage, and they found corrosion in one of the main connectors plus a pinched wire in the folding mechanism. They had to replace the entire wiring harness section and recalibrate the system. It was a serious job since they had to partially disassemble the top mechanism to access everything. Not something you can fix yourself, there's too much risk of damaging the hydraulics or electronics. My advice is to get it looked at ASAP before it gets worse. The longer you wait, the more strain you put on other components of the system.

Thanks for sharing that experience with your 4 Series. That sounds pretty spot on with what I'm dealing with. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? And has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it, or have you noticed any other quirks with the top mechanism?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update on my repair experience. After getting my 4 Series fixed, I can tell you it was totally worth it and much less expensive than I initially feared. The mechanic found it was indeed just a defective hall sensor, and there was a problem with a cable connection that needed fixing. The total came to 95 €, pretty reasonable considering what I was worried it might cost! The best news is that since the repair, the convertible top has been working perfectly. No more unusual stops, no more flashing red lights, just smooth operation every time. I can actually enjoy having a convertible again without worrying if the top will decide to stop halfway! It's such a relief compared to how it was before, when you never knew if the top would work properly or not. Trust me, getting it fixed properly was definitely the right call. Have you scheduled your repair yet? Would love to hear if you end up having a similar experience with yours.

Just got back from the mechanic and wow, what a relief! My experience was completely different from my last mechanic visit. They found the same issues you mentioned, plus a bit of debris caught in the mechanism that they cleaned out. The total bill came to around 120 bucks, which honestly feels like a steal considering how worried I was about potential costs. The top is working perfectly now, smooth like butter! No more embarrassing moments with a half-open roof or that annoying red light. The mechanic also gave it a good service and lubricated all the moving parts. They said this should prevent similar issues in the future. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it helped me know what to expect and gave me confidence to get it sorted quickly. Think we both got lucky with relatively simple fixes! Thanks again for the help, definitely saved me from stressing out too much about it.
