BMW 2-Series Misfires: Rough Running and Jerking Issues

Shaking while idling

Jerking on acceleration

Check engine light on

Hi all, experiencing some worrying issues with my 2021 BMW 2 series. The car has started misfiring, running rough, and jerking during acceleration. Throttle response is poor and check engine light is on. Pretty sure it's related to combustion misfires. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Particularly interested in workshop diagnoses and fixes that worked for you. Let me know your experiences.

Hey there! I've got some experience working on cars (not a pro, but I've dealt with my share of issues). Had a similar problem with my 2019 BMW 3 series last year. The symptoms were exactly what you're describing, rough running, misfires, and that annoying jerky feeling when accelerating. Turned out to be a faulty injector. Took it to my regular workshop where they diagnosed it, and yep, had to replace the injection valve. Set me back about 515 Euro, but it fixed the issue completely. The car's been running smooth as butter since then. Before we jump to conclusions though, could you share: Current mileage? When did the symptoms first appear? Any recent maintenance done? Does it happen more when the engine is cold or warm? This info would help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem. These symptoms can sometimes point to other issues too, so it's worth getting a proper diagnosis.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car has 10036 KM on the clock and just had its latest service about a month ago. The symptoms started showing up last week, and honestly, they seem worse when the engine is still cold, especially during morning starts. The jerking and misfiring definitely improve once the engine warms up, but they never completely go away. Your injector issue sounds similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice any specific driving conditions that made your symptoms worse? I'm trying to gather as much info as possible before taking it to the workshop.

Hey again! Yeah, those symptoms you're describing are bringing back memories of my injector troubles. With my BMW 3 series, I definitely noticed the issues were way worse during cold starts, just like you're experiencing. The morning starts were especially bad, and I remember how the car would shudder and feel really hesitant for the first few minutes. In my case, I noticed the problems were particularly bad when I was trying to accelerate gently from a stop, you know, like when you're crawling in traffic. The car would kind of stumble and hesitate, almost like it couldn't decide whether to go or not. It got a bit better when warm, but like yours, never completely went away. Since your symptoms are so similar to what I went through, and especially given how it improves somewhat with engine warmth, I'm even more convinced it could be injector-related. One thing I didn't mention before, before I got it fixed, I also noticed my fuel consumption went up a bit. Did you notice anything like that? Just one heads up, given that your car is a 2021 model, it should still be under warranty. Mine wasn't, which is why I had to pay for the repair. Definitely take advantage of that warranty while you can!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! You've just described exactly what I'm dealing with, the hesitation in traffic is spot on, and now that you mention it, I have noticed the fuel consumption creeping up over the past week. I wasn't paying much attention to it initially, but I've definitely been filling up more frequently. Your experience has been really helpful. I'll schedule a warranty appointment first thing tomorrow and specifically mention the injector issues you had. It's reassuring to know there's likely a straightforward fix for this. The cold start symptoms matching up so closely really makes me think we're dealing with the same problem. I'll update the thread once I get it checked out at the dealership. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's helped put my mind at ease about what could've been a much more serious issue!
