Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I can definitely relate to that lambda sensor issue. My 2 Series has 195956 KM on the clock, and it was just serviced last month. I don't have the error codes handy right now, but your symptoms sound spot on to what I'm experiencing. I'll get those codes read and share them. Nope, not my first BMW, had a few before this one actually. They're fantastic when everything's working right, but these exhaust system issues can be tricky. Your repair cost sounds reasonable. Did you notice any immediate improvement in performance after the sensor replacement?
Hey again! Glad you followed up. Yeah, the improvement after replacing the lambda sensor was like night and day, my 4 Series felt completely transformed. The throttle response became crisp again, and that annoying rough idle completely disappeared. The exhaust smell vanished too, which was a huge relief since my wife had been complaining about it. What really convinced me it was the lambda sensor was when my mechanic showed me how the old one was completely corroded. Makes sense given our cars are pretty similar in age and design. You mentioned you just had service last month, did they check the sensor during that service? Sometimes these issues can develop pretty quickly. Just a heads up, after my repair, I also noticed my fuel economy got way better. Went from burning through a tank like crazy to getting much more reasonable consumption. If you end up going the same route, make sure they use an OEM sensor. I tried an aftermarket one first (trying to save some cash), but it didn't work nearly as well. Let me know what those error codes say when you get them. Would be interesting to see if we're dealing with the exact same issue!
Thanks for all that detailed info! It's super helpful to hear about your experience, especially the bit about the aftermarket vs OEM sensor. I actually just got the error codes read today, P0171 and P0174, which point to a lean condition, pretty much exactly what you dealt with. Looking back at my service records, they didn't specifically check the lambda sensor last month, mostly just routine stuff like oil and filters. But your description of the improvement after replacement has me convinced this might be my issue too. The fuel economy thing especially caught my attention because mine's been terrible lately. Think I'll book it in with my mechanic tomorrow and specifically mention the lambda sensor. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, it's given me a solid starting point for fixing this headache. I'll probably stick with OEM parts given what you mentioned about the aftermarket sensor. Thanks again for all your help!
Hi there! I have some experience with cars and went through something very similar with my 2021 BMW 4 Series last year. The symptoms were exactly like yours, rough idle, sluggish acceleration, and that annoying check engine light. Turned out my lambda sensor was toast, which was messing with the fuel mixture. Took it to my trusted workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. The whole repair, including parts and labor, set me back about 375 Euro. Car's been running smoothly since then. What's your mileage and maintenance history? Also, are you getting any specific error codes? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had. Just curious, is this your first BMW? I've had a couple (started with a 3 Series), and they're great cars when properly maintained.
