BMW 2 Series Battery Issues, Warning Light & Weak Start

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hi all! Having some battery-related issues with my 2019 BMW 2 (gas engine). The battery warning light is on, engine struggles to start, and the lights are weak/flickering. The onboard computer shows battery discharge warnings. I suspect it might be a faulty battery sensor, but I'm not 100% sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and faced a very similar issue with my 2017 BMW 3 Series last year. The symptoms were exactly like what you're describing, warning lights, starting problems, and those annoying battery warnings on the display. Took it to my regular workshop and yep, it was the battery sensor that went bad. The whole repair, including parts and labor, cost me around 315 Euro. The mechanic also checked the battery itself, which was actually fine. After replacing the sensor, everything went back to normal. But before jumping to conclusions, could you share more details about your car? Like the exact model variant and mileage? Also, have you noticed any specific patterns when these issues occur (like cold starts vs warm engine)? This would help confirm if we're dealing with the same problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 2 Series just hit 93601 KM and had its latest service about 2 months ago. I'm noticing these issues mainly during cold starts, especially in the morning. It's good to hear that in your case it was just the sensor and not the battery itself, definitely gives me hope this won't break the bank! Did your mechanic mention how long the sensor repair took? I'm trying to figure out if I need to arrange for alternative transportation.

Oh hey again! Yeah, from what you're describing with the cold starts, it sounds even more similar to what I dealt with. Since you're asking about the repair time, in my case, it was actually pretty quick. The sensor replacement only took about an hour at most. My mechanic was able to get right to it since they had the part in stock. Just thought I'd mention, after they fixed mine, they told me these sensors commonly fail around the 90-100K mark, so your mileage fits right into that pattern. I remember being pretty relieved when I found out it wasn't a bigger issue. One thing I noticed before getting it fixed was that the problems were definitely worse in the mornings, just like you're experiencing. The battery warning would usually pop up first thing, but sometimes go away after driving for a while. Does yours do that too? You probably won't need alternative transport unless they have to order the part. Most decent workshops should be able to handle this pretty quickly. But you might want to call ahead to make sure they have the sensor in stock, that'll save you some time.

Thanks for all this detailed information! I feel much better knowing your repair was quick and straightforward. Yes, that's exactly what happens with mine, the warning sometimes disappears after driving for a while! And hearing that these sensors typically fail around my current mileage makes perfect sense. I'll call my local BMW workshop tomorrow and check if they have the sensor in stock. The one-hour repair time is a huge relief, I was worried I'd be without my car for days. It's also reassuring to know the actual battery might be fine, especially since these issues started showing up mainly during cold starts. I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Think I'll go ahead and book it in for next week. Better to get it sorted now before it potentially gets worse or leaves me stranded somewhere!
