BMW 1 Series: Airbag Alert & Convertible Top Troubles

Hey there! I have a 2016 BMW 1 Series diesel with about 160k km and I'm dealing with some concerning issues. My airbag warning light is on, and occasionally the convertible top acts up and won't close properly. The diagnostic scan shows there might be a rollover sensor problem. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? Any suggestions on the potential fix and rough cost estimate? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

Hey there! I can relate to your situation. Had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW 2 Series diesel a few months back. The airbag warning light came on along with some sensor malfunctions. Turned out the control unit was defective, which was affecting multiple systems including the safety features. Got it checked at a garage and they confirmed it wasn't just a simple sensor issue, the entire control module needed replacement. It was quite serious since it affected the whole safety system. In my case, they had to replace the control unit and recalibrate all the sensors. The job took about two days to complete, but it sorted out all the warning lights and system malfunctions. Based on what you're describing, especially with the convertible top issues, it sounds very similar to what I experienced. Would definitely recommend getting it checked soon since it's a safety concern. Make sure they do a full diagnostic scan rather than just looking at the airbag system in isolation. Hope this helps!

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience, that's really helpful as it sounds almost identical to what I went through! Quick follow-up: do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair job? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Just trying to get a better idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and whether I should expect any other issues down the line. Cheers!

Hey again! Absolutely happy to help! Glad to tell you that after getting it fixed, my car's been running like a charm. The whole repair job set me back 1000 Euro, mainly because of that pesky control unit that needed replacing. I know it sounds steep, but honestly, it was worth every penny considering it solved all the issues. Since the repair about three months ago, everything's been working perfectly, no more warning lights, and all the systems are functioning just as they should. The rollover sensor malfunction that was giving me headaches is completely sorted now. It's such a relief not seeing that airbag warning light anymore! If your issue is similar to what I had (and it really sounds like it is), I'd say go for the repair sooner rather than later. These things tend to get more complicated if you leave them too long. Plus, it's all about safety at the end of the day, right? Let me know how it goes when you get it sorted. Always interested to hear if others have the same experience with their repairs!

Thanks so much for all the details! I took your advice and bit the bullet, finally got my car checked out today. You were spot on about the control unit being the culprit! The mechanic I found was actually pretty great, really took the time to explain everything. Ended up costing me about 950 Euro, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. They sorted out both the airbag warning and the convertible top issues in one go. The whole job took about a day and a half. You were right about getting it done sooner rather than later. Such a relief to have everything working properly again! The convertible top's operating smoothly now, and that annoying warning light is finally gone. Feels like I've got a different car! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the decision to get it fixed. Now I can finally enjoy driving without worrying about those warning lights!
