The control unit was replaced at my garage, and it cost around 1000 euros in total. After that, everything worked perfectly again. I had a similar problem with my BMW 1 Series (also F20, but built in 2013) with the ABS warning light and the ABS/DSC system not working. In my case, it was actually due to the defective wheel speed sensor at the rear left. This paralyzed the entire ABS/DSC unit. The workshop replaced the sensor, which cost around 200 euros, including installation. After that, everything ran like clockwork again. A defective sensor is one of the most common causes of such problems and would of course be the cheaper option compared to the control unit.
