BMW 1 Series VANOS Issues Causing Multiple Engine Problems

Poor fuel economy

|

Check engine light on

Hey all, having some troubles with my 2009 BMW 1 Series. The engine's acting up with symptoms like increased fuel usage, power loss at both low and high speeds, rough idle, and I can't pass emissions. Check engine light is also on. I suspect the inlet VANOS might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic fix it? Looking for real experiences to help diagnose this properly. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars, and I dealt with almost identical issues on my 2011 BMW 3 Series. The symptoms you're describing sound very familiar. I was getting terrible fuel economy, sluggish acceleration, and that annoying rough idle too. After dealing with failed emissions and the persistent check engine light, I took it to my regular workshop. Turned out it was a faulty camshaft solenoid valve, pretty common issue with these engines actually. The fix cost me about 250 Euro, but it solved all those problems completely. My mechanic explained that when these valves start failing, they mess with the engine timing, which explains all those symptoms you're experiencing. Could you share which engine variant your 1 Series has? That would help me confirm if we're dealing with the same setup. Also, have you scanned for any specific error codes? This info would really help narrow things down. Sidenote, these issues are pretty common in both the 1 Series and 3 Series from that era, especially in the gasoline engines.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My 1 Series has just hit 141363 KM and I'm really hoping it's just the solenoid valve like in your case. Haven't had any major repairs since my last service, so this caught me off guard. I did get it scanned at a local shop and got some VANOS-related codes, but wanted to hear from other BMW owners before diving into repairs. Your insight about the engine timing makes a lot of sense, especially considering how my fuel consumption has gone through the roof lately. Definitely going to get that solenoid checked out!

Hey again! Good to hear back from you. Yeah, that mileage is pretty typical for these issues to start showing up. My 3 Series was around 155000 KM when I had the same problem. Those VANOS-related codes are definitely a telltale sign. When I got mine scanned, it threw similar codes, and that's what led my mechanic straight to the solenoid. Just a heads up, while you're getting it fixed, it might be worth having them check the VANOS seals too. My mechanic did that as a precaution, and I'm glad he did because they were starting to wear out. After getting it all sorted, the difference was like night and day. My fuel consumption went back to normal, and that annoying rough idle completely disappeared. The engine felt much smoother overall, especially during cold starts. Let me know how it goes with your repairs. If you need any specific advice about the repair process, just give me a shout. These engines are pretty solid once you sort out these common issues. At least the fix isn't too expensive compared to some other potential problems!

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's really helpful advice about checking the VANOS seals too, definitely wouldn't have thought of that. I'll make sure to mention it to my mechanic when I take it in next week. It's actually reassuring to hear that your car had similar mileage when this happened, makes me feel like I'm not dealing with some unusual weird issue. The fact that your repair made such a noticeable difference in performance really gives me hope. I'm getting tired of watching my fuel gauge drop so quickly! And honestly, if the fix is around 250 Euro like you mentioned, that's way better than I was fearing, I was having nightmares about major engine work. I'll definitely let you know how everything turns out after the repair. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and all the extra tips. It's always better to learn from someone who's already dealt with the same problem!
