BMW 1 Series Power Loss: Boost Pressure Mystery

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Longer cold start time

Loss of engine power

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW 1 Series (156K km, gas engine) and could use some advice. My engine's been acting up, power drops out of nowhere, acceleration is jerky, and fuel economy has tanked. Check engine light is on too. I suspect it might be a boost pressure issue. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and did you find a reliable fix? Any insights would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Hey there! Actually dealt with similar issues with my 2020 BMW 2 Series last month. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, unusual power loss, inconsistent acceleration, and terrible fuel consumption. Took it to the garage and turned out it was indeed a faulty vacuum switching valve. When this valve fails, it messes with the boost pressure control and throws off the entire engine management system. It's not a major repair, but definitely not something you want to ignore. The fix was straightforward, they replaced the vacuum switching valve and recalibrated the system. Car's running smooth now, back to its normal performance. Just took a day to fix. Given your symptoms and mileage, I'd bet you're dealing with the same issue. While it's not a severe problem that'll wreck your engine, it's worth getting it checked soon to prevent any related issues from developing. Based on my experience, I'd recommend finding a BMW specialist rather than a general mechanic for this one. They'll know exactly what to look for.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear you got it sorted. I'm having the exact same problems with my 1 Series right now, and your description matches perfectly. Would you mind telling me how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Really appreciate the help!

Yeah was happy to help! Since my last post, I went ahead and got it fixed, cost me 140 € for the vacuum switching valve replacement. The boost pressure control fault is completely gone now, and honestly, the car's running like a dream. No problems, no power drops, nothing dodgy at all since the repair. It's been about three weeks now, and the engine's performing exactly like it should, smooth acceleration, normal fuel consumption, and no more warning lights on the dash. Looking back, it was definitely worth getting it sorted by a proper BMW specialist. They knew exactly what they were dealing with and got it sorted without any fuss. Best money I've spent on the car recently, to be honest. If you're experiencing the same symptoms, I'd say go for it, the fix isn't too expensive and it'll save you from potential headaches down the road. My 2 Series feels like new again!

Thanks everyone for the help! Just wanted to update you on what happened. I finally took my car to a new mechanic who specializes in BMWs. You were right, it was the vacuum switching valve causing all the trouble. The repair was pretty quick and didn't break the bank, just around 150 € including labor. Got it back yesterday and what a difference! The engine's running smooth again, no more jerky acceleration or power drops. Fuel consumption is back to normal too, and that annoying check engine light is finally off. Should've done this weeks ago instead of worrying about it. The mechanic was actually great, explained everything clearly and even showed me the faulty part. Much better experience than my last garage visit. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction. Really appreciate all the advice!
