BMW 1 Series Parking Brake Failure Triggers System Alert

Electical handbrake is not working

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2007 BMW 1 Series (129k km, gasoline engine). The electronic parking brake completely stopped working, and now several driver assistance features are down too. Can't use hill start assist anymore, and there's a warning light lit up in the dash. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm looking for advice from anyone who's dealt with something similar. Did you get it fixed? What was the actual problem? Any tips on what to look out for when getting it repaired? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I can relate to this issue, had a similar problem with my 2010 BMW 3 Series last winter. The electric parking brake failed completely, and just like yours, it triggered multiple system warnings. Took it to my mechanic, who diagnosed a defective electric motor in the brake caliper. These motors can seize up over time due to corrosion and general wear. The tricky part was that it wasn't just a simple motor replacement, they had to replace the entire caliper assembly because the motor is integrated into it. It was definitely a serious repair job, the brake system is a critical safety component after all. The fix took about a day and a half because they needed to bleed the brake system and recalibrate the parking brake module afterward. Just make sure whoever works on it has experience with BMW electronic systems, the calibration part is crucial. Also, get them to check both sides, as these motors often fail on both calipers around the same mileage. Don't skip this repair, driving without a working parking brake isn't safe, plus those assistance features are important for daily driving.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about the caliper assembly needing replacement. Would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also curious if you've had any other brake-related issues pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey again! Great news, I can give you a proper update now since getting mine fixed. The whole thing cost me 505 Euro, which covered replacing that faulty electric motor in the brake caliper. I know it sounds like a chunk of change, but honestly, it was worth every penny to get everything working properly again. The best part? Haven't had a single brake-related problem since the repair. The electronic parking brake works perfectly now, no more warning lights, and all those driver assistance features are back up and running like they should. Hill start assist is working great too, which is such a relief. My advice would be to just bite the bullet and get it fixed properly. Yeah, it's not cheap, but trying to save money on brake repairs usually ends up costing more in the long run. Plus, you really want your brakes working 100%, you know what I mean? Just make sure you find a mechanic who knows their way around BMW electronics, that was key in getting mine sorted out properly. Trust me, once it's fixed, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner!

Thanks so much for that helpful update! I've finally gotten my BMW fixed and wanted to share how it turned out. Went to a certified BMW mechanic this time, and what a difference! They found the same issue you mentioned, a faulty brake caliper motor. The repair did set me back about 600 Euro, a bit more than yours, but they also found and fixed some corroded wiring while they were at it. The whole thing took two days, but it was worth the wait. Everything's working perfectly now, the parking brake, hill assist, all of it. No more warning lights on the dash either. Got to admit, I was worried it would be a much bigger problem, so I'm pretty relieved. Funny enough, while I was waiting at the shop, another guy came in with almost the exact same issue on his 3 Series! Guess these parking brake motors are a common weak point. Really glad I asked for advice here first, helped me know what to expect and not get taken advantage of. Now I can actually enjoy driving my car again without worrying about those warning lights!
