BMW 1 Series out of nowhere Dies While Driving, Help Needed

Hi everyone! Having trouble with my 2014 BMW 1 Series (194k km, gasoline engine) and need some advice. My start-stop system suddenly stopped working, and now the engine keeps shutting off out of nowhere while driving. There's a warning light on the dash and the computer shows an error code. Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm looking for suggestions before taking it in somewhere. Has anyone dealt with similar issues? What was the fix and how much did it cost? Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2011 BMW 3 Series last month. The symptoms were exactly like yours, unusual shutdowns and start-stop malfunction. The warning light had me worried too. Took it to the garage and after running diagnostics, they found the battery was severely discharged and couldn't hold proper voltage anymore. These symptoms typically show up when the battery's on its last legs. In my case, they also discovered the alternator wasn't charging the battery correctly, which made things worse. The fix involved replacing both the battery and alternator. It was quite serious since unusual shutdowns while driving are dangerous. The battery replacement alone wouldn't have solved it because of the faulty alternator. After the repair, the start-stop system started working normally again and all error codes cleared up. My advice: Get it checked soon. Battery issues can cascade into bigger electrical problems if left unchecked.

Thanks for sharing that info about your BMW! Really helpful since I'm dealing with similar symptoms. Had my mechanic look at it yesterday and funny enough, it was also battery-related, but luckily my alternator was fine. Can't remember exactly how much you said you paid for your repairs, mind sharing that again? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Just wondering if any other electrical gremlins popped up afterward.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. For my repair, I paid 290 € for the battery replacement, which was much better than what I initially feared when both battery and alternator seemed problematic. Such a relief when they found the alternator was actually working fine! And you'll be glad to hear that since the repair, everything's been running perfectly. The start-stop system is working like new again, kicks in smoothly at traffic lights and restarts without any problems. No electrical issues at all since then. The unusual shutdowns completely stopped after they fixed that heavily discharged battery. It's amazing how one failing component can cause so many scary symptoms, right? But once they sorted out the battery, it was like having a different car. Definitely worth every penny spent on the repair. Just make sure to keep an eye on the battery health from now on, I learned that lesson the hard way!

Great to hear everything worked out well with your repair! Just got back from my mechanic today and wanted to share my experience. What a relief, the repair was way simpler than I expected. Turns out my battery was totally shot, just like yours. They replaced it with a high-quality one and ran some tests to make sure everything else was working properly. The whole thing cost me 320 €, which wasn't too bad considering all the stress those unusual shutdowns were causing. The mechanic was actually really thorough and took time to explain what went wrong. Such a different experience from my last mechanic who always tried to upsell unnecessary repairs. The car's running like a dream now, no more warning lights or sudden shutdowns. The start-stop system is working perfectly again. Really glad I asked for advice here before panicking too much about it. Sometimes the simplest solution is the right one! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me understand what I was dealing with.
