Jerking on acceleration

Need help with engine troubles on my 2004 BMW 1 (46k km) Hi all! My car's been acting up lately and I'm hesitant to visit the mechanic after a previous bad experience. The engine's running on reduced power mode, jerking during acceleration, and producing smoke. There's also an error code stored in the system. I suspect it might be related to knocking combustion. Has anyone experienced similar issues? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations for getting this fixed properly. Car details: 2004 BMW 1 Series, Gasoline engine, 46,612 km Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2007 BMW 3 Series last year. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, reduced power, jerking, and smoke from deposits in the combustion chamber. After checking it at the garage, turned out there was carbon buildup causing pre-ignition and knocking. It was actually quite serious because it was damaging the pistons. They had to do a thorough cleanup of the combustion chamber and fuel injectors. The mechanic showed me the carbon deposits they removed, it was pretty bad. They also replaced the spark plugs and cleaned the intake valves. The whole job took about two days, but the car's been running like new since then. If you're getting those symptoms, don't wait too long to get it checked. The longer you drive with knocking, the more damage it can cause to your engine components. Just make sure to find a mechanic who specializes in BMWs, they'll know exactly what to look for with these common issues.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like my problem. The car's been driving me crazy with these issues. Glad to hear you got yours sorted out. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for all that work? Also, has everything stayed running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Yeah, happy to help update you on this. The total bill came to 425 € for cleaning out those nasty deposits in the combustion chamber, and I can tell you it was worth every penny. The knocking issue completely disappeared after the service, it's like having a different car! Since you asked, it's been running absolutely perfectly for the past year. No more jerking, no more smoke, and the engine's got all its power back. Actually kicks like it should now! The mechanic did a thorough job cleaning everything out and it really shows in how the car performs. I was honestly a bit worried about spending that much at first, but considering what could've happened if I'd left it longer, I'm glad I got it sorted when I did. My advice would be to go for it, these engines are great when they're running right, but you've got to take care of these issues before they get worse. If you do get it done, make sure they give you a proper clean of both the chamber and injectors, that's what made the difference in my case. Trust me, you'll notice the improvement straight away.

Thanks so much for all the details! I bit the bullet and took my car to a specialist mechanic last week. You were right, it needed a thorough cleaning of the combustion chamber and fuel injectors. The bill came to about 480 €, a bit more than yours because they found some additional buildup that needed attention. I'm really happy I went ahead with the repair. The difference in performance is incredible, no more jerking, smoking, or power loss issues. The engine's running super smooth now, just like when I first got the car. The mechanic was actually great too, showed me all the gunk they cleaned out and explained everything they did. Funny enough, while I was there, another BMW owner came in with similar problems. Guess it's more common than I thought! Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it sorted before it turned into something more serious. Sometimes it just takes hearing from someone who's been through the same thing to make the right decision.
