Hey all, my 2018 Eclipse Cross diesel (109k km) is giving me nightmares lately. The engine's running rough with black smoke when I hit the gas, keeps stalling, and the check engine light's on. Performance has gone downhill, and it's drinking way more fuel than usual. Last mechanic visit wasn't great, so I'm a bit hesitant. Anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Thinking it might be fuel-related. Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and if you can recommend a trustworthy mechanic. Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had very similar issues with my 2015 Mitsubishi ASX Diesel last year at 98k km. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, rough idle, black smoke, and terrible fuel economy. Turned out it was a faulty fuel injector connector/wiring harness. The cable connection to one of the injectors was damaged, causing misfiring and incomplete combustion. Had it fixed at my local Mitsubishi specialist, they found it pretty quickly with their diagnostic tools. Not a hugely complex repair, but definitely needed proper attention since it affects the whole fuel delivery system. I know the feeling about being hesitant with mechanics, but this isn't something you want to leave unchecked. The smoking and rough running will only get worse, and you could end up with more serious engine problems. Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Just make sure whoever looks at it is experienced with modern diesel injection systems. Good luck!

Thanks that's really helpful! Your situation does sound identical to what I'm going through. You're right about not leaving it, I'll probably get it checked this week. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you had any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting my ASX fixed last year, everything's been running like a dream. The repair bill came to 95€ for the faulty cable and labor, honestly not as bad as I was expecting given how much trouble it was causing! The best part is that those annoying fuel composition errors completely disappeared after the repair. Haven't seen a single warning light since then, and the engine's running super smooth. Fuel economy is back to normal too, which is a massive relief for my wallet! Just make sure you go to someone who knows their stuff with diesel systems. I got lucky with my mechanic, they diagnosed it straight away with their diagnostic tools. Sounds like you're dealing with the exact same issue I had, so hopefully it'll be a straightforward fix for you too. Let me know how you get on! Always happy to help a fellow Mitsubishi owner.

Just wanted to update you all on what happened. Finally got around to taking my Eclipse to a specialist mechanic that works on diesels. Turns out you were spot on – it was a damaged injector wiring harness! Got it sorted last Thursday. The mechanic was great, really knew his stuff. Bill came to around 110 € which wasn't too bad considering all the stress it was causing. The difference is like night and day! No more black smoke, engine's running smooth as silk, and my fuel consumption is back to normal. Can't believe I was putting off getting it checked for so long. The mechanic also did a quick overall check and said everything else looks good. Thanks again for the advice – especially about finding someone who specializes in diesel engines. Saved me from probably making things worse by going to a general mechanic. Really appreciate all the help! Taking her for a long drive this weekend to celebrate. Cheers!

Let our mechanics help you!
