Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey everyone, I'm having some serious issues with my 2013 Vauxhall Adam (petrol, 121k km) and I'm a bit hesitant to go back to my mechanic after a previous bad experience. The car's running really rough, black exhaust smoke, constant engine light, unusual shutdowns, and terrible performance overall. The engine feels weak and unstable, especially when idling or accelerating. I've done some research and think it might be the mass airflow sensor, but I'd love to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Did you face the same issues? How much did the repair cost, and can you recommend a reliable mechanic? Thanks in advance!

I had a similar situation with my 2015 Vauxhall Corsa last year. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I experienced with my MAF sensor, the black smoke, rough idle, and drop in power were spot on. The repair itself wasn't too complex, but it was crucial to get it fixed ASAP because a faulty MAF sensor can mess up your fuel mixture and potentially damage other engine components if left unchecked. In my case, the sensor was completely clogged with dirt and debris. My mechanic first tried cleaning the sensor, but it turned out the unit was actually damaged and needed replacement. The whole job took about an hour, and the car's been running like new since then. The engine light disappeared immediately, and the smooth idle returned. If you're near Birmingham, I can recommend my garage, they specialize in Vauxhall and did a proper job diagnosing and fixing the issue. Just make sure wherever you go, they check if cleaning might solve it before replacing the entire unit.

Thanks this is really helpful! Your experience sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. It's good to know I'm probably on the right track with the MAF sensor diagnosis. Do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you had any other issues pop up?

Hey there! Yeah, I can definitely update you on my Corsa situation. I actually just had it fixed about three weeks ago, went to that same garage in Birmingham I mentioned earlier. They confirmed it was indeed the MAF sensor playing up, just as we suspected. The total bill came to 415.00 €, that covered both the new sensor and labor. Might sound a bit steep, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The car's running absolutely brilliant now! The black smoke is completely gone, no more engine warning lights, and the idle is smooth as silk. It's like driving a different car, to be honest. Haven't had a single problem since the repair. The engine's got its power back, and I'm getting much better fuel economy too. It's such a relief not having to worry about unusual shutdowns anymore. My mechanic said the new sensor should last a good long while as long as I keep up with regular maintenance. If you're still on the fence about getting it fixed, I'd say go for it. The peace of mind alone is worth it, and you'll probably save money on fuel in the long run too. Let me know if you need that garage's details!

Thanks for all the info! I actually went ahead and got it fixed yesterday at a local garage that my neighbor recommended. You were spot on about the MAF sensor, that was exactly the problem! Ended up paying about 390.00 € for everything, which wasn't too bad considering how much better the car's running now. The mechanic was really professional and even showed me the old sensor, it was completely gunked up! The difference is like night and day. No more black smoke, engine light's gone, and it's running so smoothly now. The mechanic also gave me some tips about regular maintenance to prevent it from happening again. Definitely feels good to have this sorted! Really appreciate everyone's help and advice. It saved me from stressing too much about it and helped me make the right decision. Cheers!
