Black smoke and power loss in Toyota Corolla Diesel 2017: Possible causes and experiences

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

DPF regeneration failure

|

Loss of engine power

|

Check engine light on

|

Unsteady engine

|

Poor fuel economy

Hi guys, I'm currently having real problems with my 2017 Toyota Corolla Diesel (approx. 258485 KM down). The car is really worrying me - black smoke comes out of the exhaust when accelerating, the check engine light is on, the engine is running rough and has a loss of power, my diesel particulate filter is no longer regenerating properly and the fuel consumption is also far too high. I'm worried that it could be the exhaust back pressure sensor of the diesel particulate filter. Have you had any experience with similar problems? And how did it go at the mechanic? I had a bad experience on my last visit, so I'd rather ask here first. Thanks in advance and best regards!

Hi buddy, I know this problem all too well. Same problem with my Toyota Auris Diesel from 2016: DPF heavily loaded. Black smoke, check engine light and loss of power were also there. It was really annoying, breakdowns kept coming back. When I went to the garage, they were supposed to check the DPF and they confirmed that the DPF was clogged and the manual regeneration hadn't worked. However, it was necessary to change the exhaust backpressure sensor. That was the culprit and it solved my problem! Once I had done that, the nightmare was over. This is definitely a serious problem as a clogged DPF can cause damage to the engine, and we all want to avoid that, don't we? It's not just a loss of power, but it can also cause serious damage. So, don't take it lightly and take it to the garage. Good luck and take care!

Hey buddy, so you've finally found the culprit in your Toyota, namely the exhaust back pressure sensor. That's a really great idea, I would never have thought of it. If you can still remember, how much did it cost you at the garage? And above all - have you had any complications with the car since then or has everything gone smoothly? Because I'm in a very similar situation here and I'm still not sure whether this is the right solution for me. Thank you in advance and have a good time!

Hey buddy, yes, you're exactly right. The exhaust back pressure sensor was the culprit in my Auris. After I had it replaced by the mechanics, the problem was solved and the black plume of smoke was a thing of the past. As for the cost - it certainly wasn't a bargain. I had to fork out around €1325 for the complete procedure, i.e. replacing the exhaust back pressure sensor and repairing the heavily loaded DPF. But I can tell you, it was worth every penny! Since then, my car has been running like clockwork again, without any complications or renewed failures of the particulate filter. So I would advise you to have it checked and replace the sensor if necessary. If this is the problem, it's worth every euro and your car should run smoothly again. Good luck and hang in there!

Wow, that's really cool. Good to know that it was worth it for you. 1325€, that's quite a hefty sum. But when I think about what else the car will break, it's probably not too much. I'll probably have to tackle the whole thing and just trust that it will pay off in the end. Your advice has definitely helped me and I feel more confident now that I know what to expect. Thank you for your help and see you next time!
