Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Hey there, having some serious issues with my 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Hybrid (73k km) and would appreciate any input. My car's been acting up with black exhaust smoke, power loss, and rough acceleration. The engine's running unstable and burning through fuel like crazy. The check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the Lambda sensor, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? If so, was it really the Lambda sensor, and can you recommend a reliable mechanic who's good with Mitsubishi hybrids? Thanks in advance!

Hey there, I had similar issues with my 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV last year. The symptoms you're describing sound really familiar. My car was also showing black smoke, struggling with power, and running rough. Took it to my local Mitsubishi specialist, turned out it wasn't just the Lambda sensor. Had a cracked exhaust manifold that was causing leaks near the turbo area. This was actually making the Lambda sensor give false readings. The whole exhaust system was compromised, and it needed quite a bit of work. It was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention because it was affecting the engine's performance and could've led to more damage if left unchecked. Had to leave the car at the garage for a couple of days, but they sorted it properly. If you're in this situation, I'd strongly suggest going to an authorized Mitsubishi dealer or a specialist who knows hybrid systems well. These symptoms shouldn't be ignored, especially in a hybrid vehicle. Hope this helps.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That does sound exactly like what I'm dealing with. It's good to know I'm not the only one who's faced this. Hey, do you remember roughly how much the repairs set you back? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other issues pop up?

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting it fixed at the Mitsubishi specialist I mentioned, everything's been running like a dream. They sorted out the exhaust leak which cost me 265€, honestly not as bad as I was expecting! And you were right about the Lambda sensor, that was actually part of the problem and they fixed that too. My Outlander PHEV has been purring like a kitten since the repair job. No more black smoke, power's back to normal, and fuel consumption is way better now. It's been about a year since the fix, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. The engine's running super smooth, and those scary acceleration problems are completely gone. Honestly, it was worth every penny to get it sorted properly. If you're still on the fence about where to take yours, I really can't recommend a specialist enough, they know these hybrid systems inside out. Let me know how you get on with yours!

Thanks so much! I finally took the plunge and got my Eclipse Cross checked out at the Mitsubishi dealership downtown. You were spot on about going to a specialist! Turns out I had pretty much the same issues as you, cracked exhaust manifold and a faulty Lambda sensor. The repair bill came to around 300€, which wasn't too bad considering how worried I was initially. The mechanics were really professional and explained everything clearly. They had my car for two days, but it was totally worth the wait. Just picked it up yesterday and what a difference! No more black smoke, the acceleration is smooth again, and the engine's running perfectly. Can't believe I was stressing so much about finding a good mechanic. Should've done this weeks ago! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me make the right decision. Feels great to have my car back in proper working order!

Let our mechanics help you!
