Black Smoke and Lower Power in 2022 Diesel Lexus LX: Potential DPF Issue

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loss of engine power

DPF regeneration failure

Check engine light on

Strong exhaust smell

Hey! I got a 2022 Diesel Lexus LX with about 148,633 KM on it, acting up a bit lately. Getting lots of black smoke when I push the pedal, engine light is on, power isn't what it should be and the DPF doesn't seem to regenerate. Even the smell from the exhaust is a lot stronger than usual. I had a bit of a sour deal with the mechanic last time around and I'm wondering if this might be due to the particulate filter not being efficient enough. Anyone here had something like this with their ride? What did your mechanic say? Cheers guys!

Hey! I've got a 2019 Lexus LX Diesel and encountered something similar actually, so I reckon I can shed some light. My ride was also belching black smoke, power was a bit off and there was a strong smell from the exhaust. My check engine light was practically a christmas tree. It turns out it was indeed the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) as you suspected. You see, high mileage can indeed reduce the efficiency of the DPF as it gets clogged with soot particles. This blocking prevents the regeneration process - cleaning of the DPF - from happening which leads to power loss, unburnt diesel, hence the black smoke, stronger exhaust smell, and the illuminated engine light. A simple diagnostic at the garage confirmed my assumptions, and the DPF just had to be manually cleaned, but depending on the condition, it might need to be replaced. It wasn't a minor issue, but not overly serious if addressed timely. Ignored, it could eventually lead to more serious engine damage due to back pressure. Hope this helps, and get your ride checked ASAP to save you bigger headaches down the line. Good luck!

Hey there, Oh your response was a real eye-opener. I really thought my 2022 Lexus LX was the only one having these issues. Diesel engines, eh? Out of curiosity, do you recall how much you forked out for that DPF clean-up or replacement? Also, I'm curious to know if anything else popped up since you had it sorted. Cheers!

Hey! Glad I could help clarify things a bit. As to your questions, I took the hit on my wallet and it was about 1550€ for sorting out the DPF. I know, it's a steep figure but consider it a one-time investment given the high mileage of our diesel beasts. As for your second question, since I got that sorted out, my Diesel Particulate Filter issue hasn't reoccurred. The 'Particulate filter efficiency too low' notification disappeared from my dash, and the beast is back to purring like it should. A smooth ride with no more black smoke or quirky engine lights. Remember, it's essential to keep on top of things with a diesel engine, especially with high mileage. Do keep us updated on your situation. Cheers!

G'day I can't thank you enough for the information. Knowing it's not just me, and it's a common maintenance thing for us high mileage diesel owners is somewhat a big relief. Though it's going to be a hard hit with that 1550€ bill, it's certainly better than a complete engine overhaul down the line. I'm gonna book an appointment with my mechanic as soon as possible for that DPF clean-up or a replacement, if required. Also, it might explain the dodgy mechanic's work last time. He probably overlooked this, not thinking it could lead to bigger problems. Anyway, I'll go armed with a little extra knowledge this time. Fingers crossed it won't exceed your bill. If anything else crops up, I've got you guys to seek advice. What would I do without this forum, eh? Cheers!

Let our mechanics help you!
